For Paris, I always recommend to go for whichever location appeals more. For me, Cheval Blanc is the winner in that regard (close to Marais, just across from St Germain, not too far from Vendome area). I find the Golden Triangle area very stale.

I've been at the Cheval Blanc since Tuesday and staying in a Deluxe Balcony Room. It definitely has high ambitions and LVMH clearly put a lot of money into this. Every detail is thought out and almost every item is custom-made for the hotel, down to the straws in the minibar! The bed is supremely comfortable, the room is very elegant with layers and layers of texture, the bathroom is functional and luxurious, and the mini bar is well-stocked with complimentary soft drinks. F&B is also very high quality - including breakfast through in room dining and at Le Tout Paris as well as the gastronomic restaurant (Plenitude). Service has also been prompt and courteous.

Having said that, there are definitely issues -
  • Poor sound proofing - I can hear sirens pretty clearly in my room and I'm not even facing Quai du Louvre. What's more irritating is hearing the movement of chairs and tables in the restaurant upstairs that goes well past 1am. The noise from the restaurant is probably specific to rooms on the sixth floor
  • Housekeeping is average. Small things, but used cables aren't tidied up, empty water bottles aren't replaced, water in floral arrangements isn't changed...etc.
  • Insane traffic in this part of town. Takes forever to go anywhere in a car. Not a big issue during the day as we can walk but a big hassle when going out for dinners
  • Balcony isn't usable as no furniture was available. They did find a pair of chairs and set them up for me after saying no initially so kudos to them for that
  • Strong sewage smell in the hallways at night
  • The restaurants are popular with visitors so it feels less intimate
  • Pre-arrival communication with the concierge took way too long. 2-3 days turnaround time for simple emails
  • And a few typical new hotel issues - in-room control panel wasn't working properly, steam shower didn't turn on initially, bath mat is too thick for the shower door and gets trapped all the time...etc. But these will probably get fixed over time
If the price is right I'll come back with a pair of good walking shoes and try the hotel again in six months.

The entrance and public areas are remarkably reminiscent of Louis Vuitton stores in Asia.

It’s what Peter Marino does day in day out… are we surprised?

Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris - October 2021 (17 Photos)

FOUR SEASONS GEORGE V PARIS

As out first travel overseas in almost 2 years we decided to visit Paris and had a beautiful stay at the four seasons hotel. Absolutely flawless.

It was good to see that the hotel was almost fully booked. All of the on-site restaurants were open including Le Cinq and the George where we had dinner during our stay.

The hotel even provided a Covid testing lab in the hotel (converted guest room) where guests can get there Covid test in the morning and the results in the afternoon. We needed a PCR test to fly back to Canada, and used the hotel service.

We used the four seasons app throughout our stay to request services, including room service, shoe shine, spa, restaurants and transportation  bookings. Love the app! The response time was almost immediate.

Room

Four Seasons Suite. The hotel is in process of renovating all of the rooms in the next two years. Our room looked and feel new. Beautiful suite, lots of sunlight in the morning. 3 TVs - bedroom, bathroom, and living room. Fresh Roses in the living room and bathroom. Very quiet room.

The bedroom was closed off by French doors and curtain. Independent Temperature controls in both the living room and the bedroom.

Macaroons and fresh fruits were replenished daily.

Bathroom toiletries four suites were from Guerlain.

Dining

We had breakfast via in room dining every morning. Breakfast made up of different options. Picture of American Breakfast and the hotel signature dish, blue lobster omelette shown below. The bread basket composing of mini baguette, chocolate croissants, croissants and Salted and unsalted butter were heavenly.

One night we ordered room service from George restaurant. Food was delivered separately for each courses.

Check In

Flawless check in. Front desk knew who we were when we checked in. Room was ready at 10am when we arrived.
Beautiful Flower arrangements throughout the Hotel.

Gym

Newly renovated gym, pool and spa. COVID restriction in gym limited to only 6 guests. Still and sparkling water provided in both chilled and room temperature. The Spa was greatly expanded. Went for a treatment and overall very good., Men's change room included steam room and three showers. I used the steam room after every workout and it was very relaxing.

we did not get the chance to use the pool and the hot tub even though we brought swim suits

Service

Service was excellent. We ordered Room service multiple times and all were delivered within 30 minutes.

Understated service.. We were addressed by names throughout our stay.

We could not get the tv to sync to our iPhones in the room, and so the service technician brought and set up Apple TV in the room. We were able to log into our apple account and watch movies and music through the tv.

Overall

My favorite hotel in Paris for the world class service and the understated elegance.

So happy to see the George V is getting back in shape after the pandemic. They have limited their room inventory as they are severely understaffed still (getting better), which partly explains the higher rates. Glad to hear renovations are in full swing. The new rooms will be the best in Paris, no doubt.

Now hopefully they'll get rid of the damn feathers soon and bring back more flowers.... 2 years of nothing but orchids and feathers... eek!

Apparently, feathers are in. Le Bristol had some such arrangements sprinkled about.

Le Meurice - October 2021

Check In.

Smooth and quick, although they had our address and email wrong on the check-in form. We had a very helpful and friendly desk agent, who gave us a brief tour of the ground floor before escorting us to our room. There was no check of our CDC card or pass sanitaire. We had a small package from Amazon delivered to the hotel and there was a note to see the concierge about it, rather than just bringing it in the room.

We arrived early (11:30) and the room was ready for us. Five night stay.

Room.

https://www.dorchestercollection.com...la-parisienne/ Lovely. A nice size for us and very pretty. We faced a courtyard and the room was very quiet. The welcome amenity was flowers, macarons, chocolates and fruit. The macarons were wonderful (from Ladurée). The flowers were changed a couple of times. The fruit was replaced when we finished it, but not the macarons. There were separate temperature controls for the living room, bedroom and bathroom, with french doors separating the rooms. Good shower.

Dining.

We only had breakfast. The food was very good and the dining room decor was over the top. Service was inconsistent. They changed the order of delivering items - fruit salad before omelet or after or simultaneous. We'd get jam and butter quickly, but bread was often late or not delivered. We had to give our room number every day. Some days we had to sign, some we didn't.

Service.

We did not need much, but they were very responsive to our requests.

The doormen did not open doors, but relied on a motorized revolving door. We were never greeted by name and there was no real indication any hotel staff recognized us at any time during our stay, which is unusual in our experience.

They had regular and high speed wifi, one free the other about €25/day, which seems very nickel and dime. We ate breakfast in the restaurant every day. Nonetheless, there was a room service charge for breakfast (€8) on the final bill, which was immediately removed.

Location.

Just about perfect for us. The hotel is across the street from the middle of the Tuilleries and a short walk to the Louvre, which we visited every day it was open.

Overall.

We would stay there again, as the room and location were more important to us than the various service glitches.

Out of the 2 Dorchester hotels in Paris, I much prefer Plaza Athénée - better service, great food, with plenty of dining options, and tons of atmosphere. It is one of my most favourite hotels in Paris and seems to get better and better each time I stay.

The entry level Superior room at Plaza Athenee is selling at €1400 in mid-December. Is this regular or hiked due to a limited inventory?

If it were not for our fondness for being able to take a short walk to the Louvre, we'd explore other hotels. What else is that close? The Ritz and PHV are not really on our list. I suppose we could check the new Cheval Blanc (although looking at floor plans, there's less usable space per listed sqm than many other hotels).

La Reserve? Little further, but it's pretty great. Crillon was mentioned.
