I'm not a fan of the location of the Aman - the RC is exactly where I want to be, based what we like to do in Kyoto, and we really like the hotel. That said, I agree that it will mint money, as a certain demographic of visitor will pick the Aman anywhere as a knee jerk reaction. I used to sort of be that person but was underwhelmed by Tokyo at the price and was disappointed in a second visit report at Amanpulo and it is no longer my default. This might work in our favor, as availability and pricing at the RC might become
more appealing.

This happens. If the product is good enough everyone may come and you still are the top game. There is no rule that an Aman must be better than a RC. BUT I think they have in wide parts different target-Groups. Many who stay at a RC wonīt stay at an Aman. Guess more overlaps with FS as there isnīt a program like Bonvoy but still some different kind of guests.

Aman has really boosted their Japanese profile with Tokyo and Emu and having Japanese bloggers go out to all the properties for coverage. I don't think RC will lose out too much, as, other people will fill in the gaps for what is still a very new and luxurious hotel.

Hyatt Regency Kyoto should be afraid of all of the new competition. Their hardware and facilities were inadequate before RC arrived and now they're hopelessly behind in the luxury game.

We have been staying in RC , like overlooking the mountains & river and watching the hawks on the thermals . This is our base to enjoy the numerous restaurants including within RC along with Pierre Herme :)

Our stop before Nemu , yes it is Nemu - posted somewhere much earlier . The Nemu tree is also on property ;) . Not to be confused with Nemu Resort / Golf next door ..

Now come October / November , we will have 3 Amans to enjoy between the RWC matches :) !

@FlyerEC
This Aman is going to have the VD favorite spa and wellness center?

what did people here want aman to do in kyoto?
if aman kyoto could occupy any land (or building) what would have been ideal?
aren't beijing, shanghai, kyoto examples of 'different' ways aman can do cities?
I think somewhere with a view of Kiyomizu-dera would have been neat but probably impossible due to space restrictions/heritage building code.

Au contraire I think Hyatt Regency is just fine. Their rates are far, far below the others so they're not really competing (+ Hyatt points etc etc).

Hyatt is building a Park Hyatt in Kyoto, however. That will definitely face competition!

Just surprised all rooms are within reach of each other.

FlyingDoctorwu Mar 15, 2019 8:52 am

Any pics or description about how the suites differ?

website updated >
aman.com/resorts/aman-kyoto/rooms-pavilions
curious where 2 villas are and how 'isolated'
24 60m2 rooms , 2 223m2 2BR villas
press: "four guest pavilions" = 6 rooms per?
sounds like these are names of pavilions?

Susuki "River-fronting, east-facing rooms close to the Living Pavilion, Susuki are located on both the ground and first floors, looking over the gardens."

Nara "west-facing rooms with views over the beautiful moss-covered gardens, adjacent to ancient stone entrances and in the heart of the resort."

Kaede "west-facing rooms with views over the beautiful gardens and mountains in the distance, adjacent to ancient stone entrances and in the heart of the resort."

Hotaru "west-facing rooms and are located on both the ground and first floor, ensconced on the mountainside and fronting the fast flowing Kamiya river."

Takagamine Pavilion "Located on raised land, the east-facing...looks over the entire garden with the Hieizan mountains in the distance. Sitting adjacent to the moss covered Tengamine stone steps, perched above a six-metre tall hand crafted ancient stone wall and offering floating views over the cedar and maple forest, the pavilion offers total immersion in the surrounding landscape...living room, a traditional Japanese Tatami room, Western dining room and kitchen area. Two en-suite bedrooms...futons can be provided in the Japanese Tatami room...Various private meditation gardens nearby"

living, dining, spa, arrival pavilions
resort map will be interesting
also residences? (= the 2 villas?)

Either monsoon season or Jan-Feb outside of CNY.

The rates are certainly not for the faint of heart...

Room photos are a bit of a bummer. Same overly-minimalist style as Aman Tokyo. Feels like you're inside a shiny wooden box.

The rates are not really a surprise ..

Hopefully , now that GM Akira S is on board , there will be opening specials in the works .

Suites look somewhat similar to styles of Nemu & Tokyo .
