It will not be called Serai. Promised not to reveal the name until end of May, as it is still being registered worldwide. Latest opening date for Luang Prabang looks like August, although I suspect October.

Shanghai confirmed
Aman Shanghai (although on the outskirts...) was recently confirmed by Aman on the Aman Event, which chinmoylad (the artist formerly known as deathscar http://cdn.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif) attended. So I upgraded it to "with physical evidence" on Page 1 of this thread. Huge restauration project of old chinese buildings in beautiful scenery, opening not before summer 2017, I would suspect autumn.

Aman Shanghai announced officially. Opening date still yet to be set (approx a year at least). Huge restoration project - looks to be a mansion/Chinese-manor style property on the outskirts, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

There is a new hotel due to open May/June right on the corner of the night market. Has a pool. It will be the most central hotel with pool when completed. Was called the Mount Phousi hotel but has been demolished for a new hotel. I am told about mid range price so similar to what you are already looking at.
Gary is the new GM. It is at the foot of Mount Phousi and at the southern end of the night market so very central. I can't remember the name but when I see Gary I will forward it onto you. Good idea to give me a reminder in another month. The hotel looks very very nice and I recall him saying to me that prices would be around 120usd but don't hold me to that.

Very strange: the next post in tripadvisor does not sound like an upcoming amanesque luxury resort - 120 USD room rate, just south of the night market... That's nearby Amantaka, and I could not remember very large and very special real estate there!

So could it be just a nice little 4-star-hotel? Strange!

Adrian Zecha is back with a new company Azula and the SERAI brand.
Azula develops, manages and markets resorts and hotels. Developed under the “Serai” brand, each property possesses a distinctly unique character and charm and by limiting size of the properties to a maximum of 80 rooms and suites, provides for personal and attentive service, yet achieves this within a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
The company’s key executives have worked together previously with the globally recognised Amanresorts since its inception. The team are applying this experience and business ethos to creating a new product and brand, which, through price point, caters to a wider market segment.
The aim of the Serai is to open three to four hotels and resorts each year

i guess it was in a PM that someone else told me "4 star"
GHM had serai branded properties originally
old GHM quote >
individually-named properties such as The Legian, Bali or The Datai, Langkawi cater to the more affluent traveller, providing unparalleled style and comfort. The Chedi properties are defined by understated elegance while The Serai hotels offer a stylish yet affordable alternative.
hsyndicate.org/organization/17013777.html
The word ‘Chedi’ typically refers to place of meditation. In the same, way, Chedi hotels are created as tranquil settings where on their journeys, travellers rediscover the peace of solitude and stillness amidst environs of beauty.
Chedi Club takes the experience of a Chedi stay to a higher level with more exclusive offerings, personalised service and intimate encounters for a singularly memorable journey.
‘Serai’ is used to describe large inns found along trade routes in central and western Asia. The Serai brand was developed to provide quality accommodation for discerning travellers in a destination with limited luxury offerings. The GHM DNA of design remains a consistent thread in Serai-branded developments.
Ahn Luh is an urban resort brand that epitomises a contemporary China meaningfully influenced by a long history of cultural traditions.

In January this year, GHM once again joined hands with BTG and together with a third partner, Jin He, established a formal partnership to bring The Chedi brand to China, Hong Kong and Macau. The first Chedi in China will be located in the hilly coastal region of Ninghai in China's Zhejiang province, known for its mountainous landscape and scenic beauty.
Said Hans R. Jenni, GHM's co-founder and president, "It has always been our intention to grow The Chedi brand. For China, this is a perfect fit in terms of style, quality and product offering… I am confident that this collaborative partnership will open doors for The Chedi in greater China and beyond."
GHM's focus on partnerships is a strategic management decision given on-going interest by various interested parties to collaborate on a varied range of development projects. "The current emphasis on partnerships is based on an efficient and effective model by which GHM can continue to use its expertise and experience in settings where our partners grant new resources, options and opportunities," explained Jenni. He continues, "This, of course, leads to change: when it came time for GHM to review the management contract for The Legian Bali, given the new area of focus as a company, as well as the deep friendship we have forged with its owners, we decided not to pursue a new term of management under GHM, and are glad that The Legian Bali team will continue to grow what we have started together."

I did see the new hotel and it is larger, and apparently lots of staff will leave. I personally didn't see much appeal with Amantaka. Sure the rooms are alright, but the Aman pools next to walls just aren't my thing. I didn't think the All-inclusive worked there since there were lots of great cafes around I'd rather go to.
I liked how Amantaka had a relaxed feeling and it reminded me of the country club a lot, with slow service, okay food and rather than friendly waiters. I would not go back... just wasn't for me, and I think I would have enjoyed one of the other places more.
I guess I was left scratching my head on the high cost of Amantaka (and Amansara) afterwards. I did like Amanbagh a lot, though.

No more high prices, either - very affordable accommodation with caring staff, in true Amanresorts style. This is AZ's new mantra.

sounds like my experience at COMO properties. I don't see the value in Aman, personally. I'd rather spring for something that's more high end or something less expensive, and it sounds like this new brand understands consumers like myself.

It is the old Phousi Hotel and will not become an Amanclone, but will be more of a simple, albeit well run hotel, rather like the old Serai in Bali - which AZ used to call a 3-star, but was anything but.

Sounds good. Should it be open by January do you think?
