They probably also just don't care. I was told by one of the staff that they have very few repeaters (probably a chicken and egg situation though as I would consider returning if service was better)

I would certainly return if I had the funds (it's not cheap!) and the time, as even though we had a frankly terrible stay, it is just so beyond beautiful out there. I would just go back with very tempered expectations, which were already tempered when we went 9 months ago based on what I had read here previously.

Sorry, but for that price...given the poor service that I read here...I'm fine waiting and going elsewhere. Too many wonders, places and experiences to choose from.

Post Ranch Inn is very similar. The Amangiri/PRI are so spectacular that you tend to overlook the cost and the poor service.

It is. But I've been forbidden to consider a return by my SO after we got a room in July that didn't have working AC. Since the resort was full, they did nothing. I didn't press and we just suffered. There was a temporary head chef at the time who spent most of his time yelling. "I NEED YOU TO COOK!!!!!!!!" Food was average at best.

Did you pay them for the unintended sauna?

I haven't been back for a while, this is very sad. I went twice when they were still fairly new, and had an absolutely amazing stay on my first visit (even though I think at the time there were only 5 other guests at the resort). Second time was pretty average, but nothing appalling. I've been thinking about going back but sounds like I should put that budget elsewhere. They obviously have been getting a lot of press and have a lot of internet celeb/influencers staying there so they probably don't care anywhere.

They definitely get a lot of the "influencers" who live here in LA to come. Not sure if they offer any discounts or anything, but when those people with a ton of social media followers post a stunning picture I am sure it helps with demand. Plus, for many of the influencers / followers it is their first Aman, so they assume they are paying for the space, not the service. In southern CA on a weekend, anything decent is going to be close to $1k / night.

giri is centered/designed around location, both giri's land, and nearby national parks.
there'll never be anything like/near giri, even if some dont value hard product or site
some well regarded managers, chef, guide (great reports for guide) are no longer there
some of us value few rooms, aman has been only one to have that as brand standard.
many here spend $1K+ at not best big box city hotels, yet no 'discussion' of rates..
giri also includes (vs additional) full board, some guided hikes, some fitness classes

I think sometimes the trending narrative can carry people away in these forums. People inexorably seem to like to pile on...and those with contrary perspectives sometimes don't always feel comfortable sharing in those circumstances. (I'm not one of those. ) So you can be left with an imbalanced set of perspectives.
I don't think Amangiri is "so bad" though it seems like it isn't always up to everyone's standard. We have friends who went this spring who raved, actually--and they're pretty demanding like me.
We had an excellent--but not perfect--stay in April 2015 at about the same time as many others before and since on this thread similarly were slamming the property.
Of course, we also had an excellent--but not perfect--stay at much more celebrated Amanbagh in Jan 2017. I'd say our Amangiri and Amanbagh experiences were quite comparable--but I'd give the food/beverage edge to Amangiri, actually.
It is my experience that too many people have problems on a stay yet don't mention those until check-out or on forums like this after the fact. I'm not saying that anyone herein has done that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Sorry--but I don't quite feel as sorry for that passive-aggressive customer. Amangiri can't resolve a problem when one is out the door or back home.
When we were at Amangiri and had any issues, I dealt with them immediately. Concomitantly, Amangiri was able to take care of our few issues and make us very happy.
I also think Amangiri is often the first or only Aman people visit with 100% or close to full occupancy. It must be the highest occupancy or close to that of all Aman properties. Welcome to the new world and to a new Aman reality.
We plan to return to Amangiri and expect another great stay. But they'll rue the day if our air con isn't working.

time of stay is critical, especially at aman and independent properties. but even then, various factors can still apply, and for various reasons experiences can be different.
your stay at amanbagh was after harish left. while there are other properties in locations similar/equivalent to bagh's location, i think bagh is similar to giri in the sense that there is not going to be another hotel built 'adjacent' to it, let alone a similar one. bagh doesnt have the national parks and land that giri does, and is is 2+ hours / 60 miles from jaipur, which has estimated population of 3.5 million.

amans and independent properties are especially dependent on GM
