If and when a particular strike begins and flights are actually beginning to be cancelled, you can call LH and ask for a rebooking/rerouting.
LH usually rebooks to other LH Group carriers, any star alliance carrier or other IATA airline it has an interline agreement with. The preference to do so is in the same order and done only if the preferred alternative doesn't have any free seats in the class of service (not booking class). Award bookings are treated the same way, although you may be requested to contact the issuing carrier for reissuing the ticket. LH issued tickets are usually reissued using the ATC irreg system.

Against the background of the announced strike by the Independent Flight Attendants Organization (UFO) on Lufthansa flights on Thursday 26th of November, Friday, 27th of November and Monday, 30 of November 2015, Lufthansa is trying to keep the effect of the strike on its customers as low as possible.

After the end of the longest strike in the companys history, Lufthansa will already return to almost normal operations on Saturday and will offer its customers the usual service as soon as possible.
All scheduled long-haul connections will be able to operate on Saturday. Furthermore the long-haul connections from Frankfurt to Hong Kong, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, which were scheduled to take off on late Friday evening, will be delayed to Saturday morning. Thus a cancellation of these connections can be avoided.
Lufthansa will also return to almost normal operations on short- and medium-haul flights on Saturday. Due to operational reasons, there can be occasional flight cancellations, if the aircraft or crews are not yet at the site of operation.
Lufthansa would like to sincerely apologize again to all customers, who have been affected by the strike of the Independent Flight Attendants Union (UFO) during the past days. The company has done its utmost to keep the effects on their customers as low as possible.
Altogether the company was forced to cancel approximately 4,700 flights during seven strike days. Affected by these cancellations were approximately 550,000 passengers.

Due to the strike actions Lufthansa has to cancel 126 long-haul and 10 continental connections resulting in about 27.300 passengers being affected by flight cancelations. Nearly all German and European continental flights will be operated as scheduled.

The Independent Flight Attendants Organization (UFO) has announced strike action for all Lufthansa flights from/ to Frankfurt and Dusseldorf on Monday, 9.11.2015 between 4.30 and 23.00 and flights from/to Munich between 4.30 and 00.00.

LH usually rebooks to other LH Group carriers, any star alliance carrier or other IATA airline it has an interline agreement with. The preference to do so is in the same order and done only if the preferred alternative doesn't have any free seats in the class of service (not booking class). Award bookings are treated the same way, although you may be requested to contact the issuing carrier for reissuing the ticket. LH issued tickets are usually reissued using the ATC irreg system.

- long haul flights from/to FRA and MUC
- all flights from/to DUS
Am supposed to be travelling with LH MAN-MUC on Wednesday afternoon and after speaking to the corporate TA we have now booked a back-up BA ticket LBA-LHR-MUC. Not knowing what is happening until 24hrs beforehand really is very disruptive and makes it difficult to plan around - which I guess would be exactly what the union is trying to achieve.

I was not able to rebook outside of LH group for Bogota to Frankfurt on Thursday night, even though there are no other LH group airlines flying to Bogota. They said the flight has to be cancelled. Flying via the United States on Avianca and United is bound to sell out by the time my Bogota flight is actually cancelled. I'm furious that LH isn't rebooking yet on non LH group airlines. My attempt was with a supervisor by calling the US customer service line.

We flew Man/FRA/NUE on Friday - what a mess.
Got a text from LH as we were boarding the flight to FRA that our onward flight to NEU was cancelled. We did not know about the strike so thought that they would just put us on the next flight.
On arrival we were told to go to A13 (service desk) we queued there for the best part of an hour. When it was our turn to enter the 'pen' where you are given a numbered ticket then have to wait for a CS Agent to be free we were told to go to the ticket machine at the side of Customer Services and get a train ticket. We couldn't understand why someone could not have walked up and down the queue asking if anyone was transferring to a domestic flight.
We scanned our boarding passes and within seconds had a train ticket to Nuremberg. At least the train was more comfortable than the plane but the train only took us to the main train station and we needed to be at NEU to meet some friends off the Munich flight.
If you have a domestic connection then don't wait in the *****queue.

Die UFO-Gremien werden sich umgehend zusammensetzen.
An dem für den 10.11.2015 geplanten Streik ändert sich nichts.
Den morgigen Streik werden wir aber - trotz dieser Provokation - nicht ausweiten.

If there's an award ticket and the flight is cancelled, and rebooking is done for a couple of weeks later, are they willing to open award space/book into a revenue class of service or is refund really the only option?

UFO have received a better offer from LH. They will think about it and provide more information tomorrow about what will happen on Wednesday and beyond. Tomorrow's strike goes ahead as already annnounced.

Can I just ask, out of interest, what is the legal position with strikers in Germany? It is simply unlawful for an employer to fire striking employees for failing to turn up for work? Or is it more a public relations thing where it's seen as bad form to fire them?

Whatever to avoid a US connection was fine to me.
LH call center utterly useless and with the 'take it or leave it' attitude.
But at least managed to talk with someone.
Yesterday after hours on hold at the German and Italian call centers I gave up and sorted it out at WAW with the help of an efficient Polish agent. Rebooked on AZ to NAP via FCO.
