Not much time to do anything outside the airport. Exiting Japan immigration can be lengthy though it can also be short. 2 1/2 hours isn't really enoug time to get to Narita city and back.

I agree. Not much time to do anything but hang around the departure terminal. You can take a hot shower for 300 yen, eat Japanese and western food at the numerous restaurants/shops, surf the internet for a fee, or browse through the duty free shops. I'm not the high drama type and don't feel comfortable leaving the terminal at an international destination unless I have at least 8 hours. Then again after a hot shower I have a bite to eat while my time sipping Sapporo or Asahi in the lounges.

No customs or immigration formalities for those connecting to international flights.

Just returned from a PHX-SFO-NRT-TPE trip and just a heads up:

If you are connecting in NRT, you DO have to pass through security again. Inboard was no problem, but outbound was a nightmare - despite a 90 min connection, I barely made my flight due to long lines. Please beware.

I've never seen this practice elsewhere and am confused by it since you've already been cleared on the inbound flight. Anyone has similar experiences?

ATL. All arriving international paxs making a connection through ATL are required to go through security. Until very recently, this was also in effect for paxs with ATL as a final destination.

Also LAX and EWR in the US.

SIN has gate security but this is totally painless.

Anywhere that dom and international are separated a dom->int connection or vice versa will also have this.

there are lots of internet options in t1, but i don't know of any free access points outside of the various lounges. see here for more info:

Showers and Day rooms

I've got 3 hours on the outbound and 5.5 on the return at Narita. I plan to use the showers on the outbound and the showers and Day room on the inbound. Do the day rooms have showers or are they separate? Can you book?

Does anyone know how busy they get? Outbound is around 6pm on a Thursday and Inbound is 6.30am on a Sunday.

It was 10 years ago I transited through NRT and I remember the shower rooms then had the traditional Japenese buthtubs and it was a real luxury to have a soak in this sort of tub for a while after a 12 hours flight. The Narita website didn't make any mention of this - are they still there?

iirc, most of the showers in nrt are japanese style (though a bit on the small side, if you ask me). on your return, why not go into narita for a few hours?

Is there a transit area or special line for transit passengers to avoid customs/immigration?

I'm coming from Newark, connecting on to Bangkok. We'll have to change terminals, and definitely want to squeeze in a shower between flights if we can. Will we have access to these areas if in transit?

Also, will we be asked to pay the int'l departure tax as well? The fee won't be included in our ticket, as we're flying space-available. Any tips are appreciated!

Transit paxs need not go through customs/immigration, although you will have to go through security. An agent should be on hand to greet your flight and direct transit paxs to security. Have documents (boarding pass/ticket receipts/NRSA ticket) prepared for inspection at the security checkpoint.

After security, proceed downstairs to the bus that will shuttle you to the other terminal. Once you arrive, you have unfettered access to all the facilities within the terminal, including pay showers, restaurants, etc.

I am not sure what sort of arrangements there are for NRSAs, e.g. whether you check-in at the transfer desk or at the gate.
