It's JAL-JAL.. The flight is consistently early/on time and gates are pretty close to each other, so i'm not worried about delays, but JAL's website only shows MCT info for Domestic-Domestic, International-Domestic, and Domestic-International, so I'm not sure what the MCT is for internatonal to international is. That's my concern is if 50 minutes is enough for bags to change planes and recent experiences from someone transitting to know how long transit security coming from BKK has been taking.
Gates being close does not matter so much, as what is the walk to transit security and back to the gate.....

Layover at 1:50 AM
I am attempting to book a "backup" trip in case Japan is closed this October. I am wanting to go to Vietnam. The rules I read are that if you are transiting that it has to be the same "calendar day". Normally, I would read that from midnight to midnight... However, there is a 1:25 AM flight on JAL to Ho Chi Minh City. If my flight on ANA (F Suites) arrived at 5:00 PM, would I be allowed to transit through HND on the 1:25 AM (Typo in the title of 1:50 AM) flight the next day (so 8 hour 25 minute layover). They're not the same alliance so I'm wondering if I would run into trouble there as well. Any advice on if this is possible would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to lose my ANA F Suites out of JFK since we were able to book two seats with Virgin Atlantic points. Thanks for any input into if this is possible!

If there is one airport / country in the world where I would not worry about a 50 minute connection -- it's Tokyo (both Narita and Haneda). If your flight is even slightly delayed I would imagine you will be met at the gate and escorted directly to priority security -- bottom line is don't sweat it -- it will be fine.

At HND the international terminal is open overnight and connecting passengers can stay airside. Your connection will not turn into a pumpkin at midnight.

thank you so much! One more follow up question… can the layover be over 24 hours? I can get business class if I have a 24 hour and 5 minute layover. Not sure if I would book it, but just wondering if it’s an option. Thanks!

24 hrs. and 5 min. transit at HND should be fine. You mentioned "back-up plan," does this mean you will have two separate tickets, one ticket for JFK-HND on ANA and another separate ticket for from HND to another destination? If you are going to have checked baggage then you want to check with ANA. It will be up to an airline, it is nothing to do with a policy of HND, to through check baggage on two separate tickets or not. If you are unable to enter Japan then you will not able to retrieve your checked baggage at HND and recheck with the airline departing HND.

Just a heads up to all re: Narita Terminal 1 - ANA has just opened a new lounge opened near gate 22 that is basically for star alliance customers -- it has the usual decent NH food (for a lounge) but has no view at all as it is down one level -- the drinks are also decent -- and the club is closer than the over-crowded main NH lounge near the gates in the 50's.... Service was excellent and the lounge did not get too busy -- just keep walking past the Korean Airlines lounge to the end where you will see the signs for the ANA lounge...

I think it is now called the "Narita Travel Lounge" -- not associated with any airline. As I mentioned in another thread Narita Airside seems as busy as ever -- landside it's still virtually empty -- and most all of the stores airside are still closed.... We got to watch Abe's funeral procession as we waited for our flight to NYC - regardless of your politics it was a sad and moving event....
