My translation may be (ok, probably is) off, and this may not apply to Mobile Suica on iPhones being charged via Apple Pay, but I want someone more fluent to check the content of this email I just received from Suica to confirm it does not mean we are losing the ability to charge mobile/iPhone Suica via Apple Pay, but this change affects regular Suica accounts...

In short, the email content is about no longer being able to recharge your normal/mobile SUICA through the carriers (i.e., carrier billing for 3rd party services). Apparently not enough people are using it so JR East decide to end it.

I didn't know what "Easy Mobile SUICA" is so I did a little bit of reading with official JR East page https://www.jreast.co.jp/mobilesuica...bilesuica.html
Both Easy Mobile SUICA and regular Mobile SUICA are for mobile phones, but only Easy Mobile SUICA can recharge through the carriers, probably due to ties with the SIMs and carrier versions of the mobile phones so it is not transferrable and there is no way to re-issue the same card/number; on the other hand, Easy Mobile SUICA cannot use saved credit cards to recharge. It is mostly as an alternative for people who don't have credit cards.
Only JR East View credit cards can auto-charge Mobile SUICA it seems, with other credit cards one havs to do that manually whenever your mobile SUICA is low on balance.

Refund of unused balance
Sorry if this has been answered before but I couldn’t find it. I have unused balance on my Suica card sitting in the Wallet of my IPhone 8. Does anyone know how can I get a refund of the the used balance? I’m still in Japan so if it requires me visit a JR ticket centre I can. Thanks for much!

Your other option would just be to use up the remaining balance at convenience stores / fast food stores ?

Snipping a bit of another thread since this is relevant for repeat visitors with Mobile Suica
Also relevant - bring a power bank for your iPhone, especially if you're using your phone for maps.
https://atadistance.net/2017/11/10/a...d-battery-fud/
I don't use my apple watch for navigation/LTE so it doesn't run flat. Could be a good reason to keep the suica on an iWatch vs iPhone if you have both options.
My mobile Suica was a little glitchy boarding Keikyu at HND upon arrival and the error condition was cleared/reset by the agent at the desk with the contact pad on the counter. So I carry a backup card and a bit of coinage just in case.
...
ETA: Ah, glitch could have been the 6 month non-used Mobile Suica lock. https://atadistance.net/2018/04/26/u...he-suica-lock/ The "SF" menu icon in Mobile Suica app does indicate I rode before adding more credit.

Has anyone with tech skills been able to decipher the specs on the new iPhone Xs - will they come with built in SUICA-supported NFC chips worldwide like the model 8, or are we back to buying compatible phones in Japan again?

I believe the new Fall 2018 iPhones will have Suica for all the models worldwide but the Apple Suica help doc hasn't been updated for iPhone Xs, Xs Max, or XR yet https://support.apple.com/ja-jp/HT207154.
There are 4 Xs variants this time.
https://www.pcmag.com/news/363740/wa...hone-xs-models
LTE band comparison chart: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing from https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
Docomo seems to use band 21 in Tokyo (according to cellmapper.net) and band 42 for "premium 4G"* which aren't on the US model. Band 11 is used by au which doesn't have sims catered to non-residents.
https://simfree-pc.net/docomo-band-summary/#Band_4235GHz
The initial iPhone X has some problems with Suica https://atadistance.net/2018/09/15/i...problem-index/ so it might be good to wait for a few production runs and keep an eye on atadistance to make sure the issue hasn't cropped up again.
Apple also updated the Core NFC library and is allowing background NFC reading on the new lineup
https://nfc.today/news/apple-iphone-...fc-tag-reading
* Docomo Band 42 supports 4x4 MIMO (almost 1GB down) which is supported by the Xs and Xs Max, but not XR. Too bad the US model is missing this band but MVNO's and Docomo Japan Visitor Sim prepaid probably won't get unthrottled access to it anyhow. https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/support/area/premium_4g/

XR is surely a cost down version of Xs and Xs max no matter how they says about it. I doubt if it has the same amount of antenna and cutting the service here and there such as memory chips and storage speed (disregarding the CPU being the same). it's just a over price mid-range device at best

Reading the subtext - Any iPhone Xs/ Xs Max/XR sku should be able to support Apple Pay Express Transit Cards including Japan (Suica)
https://atadistance.net/2018/09/14/a...nfc-on-ios-12/
More details in the link explaining "Express Cards with power reserve" functionality
Update
An earlier edit suggested MIFARE based cards for UK and Taiwan transit were coming to Apple Pay. Apple initially limited mention of ‘Express Cards with power reserve’ to iPhone XS and iPhone XR specs in certain countries. Apple has now updated spec pages worldwide to include ‘Express Cards with power reserve’. This confirms that iPhone XS and iPhone XR sold anywhere can use Apple Pay Express Transit Cards with power reserve in Japan and China.

New iPhone
Hey all. So I upgraded to the new iPhone XS today. Did the backup and then restore on iCloud. Had the Suica on my old iPhone, which worked a treat... but now that the iCloud restore has completed, the Suica card is nowhere to be found in the Apple Wallet. Any ideas from anyone??

Not that your old phone is lost, but that the Suica can be deleted via icloud.com. Looks like it will work without marking it as lost (might lock the phone if you're going to trade the old one in maybe?).
