Hellmann's. Keep in mind that I'm from the US - not Japan. OTOH - I live in the south - where Duke's is probably The King (still prefer Hellmann's). Robyn

Kewpie over Hellmans. Grew up on Hellmans. I can't imagine putting Hellman's on お好み焼き. Or on ゆで卵. Etc. Etc.

The Japanese make mayonnaise as well as the Brits. Perfectly awful stuff. The best mayonnaise is homemade anyway. Cannot imagine using store bought unless in an absolute mayonnaise emergency. You will not find too many real restaurants using anything else than in house made.

Disagree. My homemade mayonnaise is terrible.

Easy. You make wings for a casual day of football watching and you need some ranch dressing because you forgot you used up on salad the night before. No mayonnaise = big problem in this situation.

Wink

I have noticed that the trash cans I used to find at 田舎コンビニare few and far between at their big city counterparts ! I am sure there was something about that on bento.com or was it gaijinpot ?

I should note that on my last trip to Tokyo I remember at least five instances of elevator open/close buttons not being labeled with anything but 開/閉 (and a 開延長 once- why don't elevators in the US have this button?) in plain white. Much less of a problem for me because I can read, but for others, I see this being an issue.

water at non-fancy restautants

When one asks for water at a casual restaurant (for drinking, not for tea-making), is there typically a choice between tap water and bottled water, or is it usually one or the other? If it's bottled water, are both sparkling (fizzy) and flat water usually available? I'd usually be interested in a birru, but that's not an option for me at the moment.
