Sure, I like the name and sound of "AoI" more, but functionally, this won't affect me one bit. In fact, in the other thread, there was even a counter petition that was started to keep the name change :p

We finally managed to get off this topic, with 15+ non-name related posts, and then bam, right back to square one.

Just because the first few people who saw the change didn't mind it, that does not imply everyone didn't mind. Surely you read the legnthy list of people who opposed the change above?

Here's another attempt to change the topic...

Anyone know if CCU is ever going to end up getting a new airport? They seem to be re-doing the airports around the country, and I'm just wondering if this backwards facility will ever get the facelift that it (certainly doesn't) deserve...

Here's what sankaps had to say about the new terminal a few weeks ago:

Nice motifs such as tastefully done large font Tagore scripts on the ceilings etc. Much more architecturally impressive (and larger) than BLR for sure. Will have 17-19 airbridges. And a direct flyover access from the main road.

Opening will likely be October, with a soft or limited opening hoped for July (apparently three smaller foreign airlines have been asked if they want to be the guinea pigs). Who knows, they may make it, judging from how in India things get done in a scramble at the last minute. I hope the finish is good, and that operational processes and customer service are also improved, not just the building! For a starters, they should keep it clean and clear the trash!

Here's some pictures that sankaps took back then:

On this picture, the little blue building on the right is the current terminal, while the glass building is the new terminal. Quite a massive difference.

How on earth did I miss an entirely new terminal when I was there in March? Granted, we landed at 1 AM, but still. Wow. I didn't even see an entire terminal. Fail. :(

Don't mean to open any old wounds... just pointing out the fact that subscribing directly to the I-BA forum makes checking it more convenient for the forum regulars. And of the people you mentioned on the petition list, none of them had posted in the other thread, so I want to let them know about this, as I hadn't realized it was possible until someone else told me.

Also, my condolences to your blog... I would love to see some orange, though! :D

CCU: quite surprised they pulled up that huuuge building so fast. In February there was nearly nothing there!

Quite impressed that so many airports are getting a facelift. I was actually proud to transit DEL this past Dec.

YVR IMO doesn't need one, because I like it the way it is.
(Although I do miss one thing. Having to clear Canadian customs and picking up luggage when in transit to the US. This made it much easier to hidden city rather than having to find flights out the next day. Especially when it is a flight that arrives really early like JL18. It also allows the bags only to be tagged to YVR. Having to pick up bags before going to US preclearance would also be nice, as then I could check the bags YYC-YVR as an example instead of to the US destination.)

Agreed! And it's a pretty decent looking one too!

I was talking about Indian airports. But this is an interesting piece of info. Are all Canadian airports moving to this? Does Canada not require transit visas?

YVR and YUL have it.

Pictures are starting to come in of the Sukhoi Crash. I've updated my blog post accordingly.

Don't be surprised.. I travel from cal every week and I missed it for the longest time.. if u land/ take off from the current cal airport, u won't really see much, till u come out and crane ur neck around to actually notice anything.. and it's difficult at night time.. the only reason I noticed was when my flight decided to take us on a ride around the airport, and I noticed a new building altogether..

it's looks great from the current status.. I just hope they manage to maintain it, instead of making it a fancy dustbin..

We come to know of the new airport bldg being built as soon as we saw a new route to the domestic terminal ( IIRC nearly 1.5 yrs back).. we asked why and they said bcoz of the new terminal construction..and then we could see the skeleton structure being built..
If coming out of the domestic arrival, its pretty clear on the left and if from intl arrivals, then too the same only a bit farther away..
IMHO, only turning you neck to the left is enough, no need for craning ;)

For a person who (according to the gf) is blind as a bat in close range (note: I don't even wear glasses), I guess a terminal building several hundred feet away was a foregone conclusion.

She always manages to somehow camouflage stuff wherever she keeps it, so when I get sent to go get it, it really isn't my fault that I can't find them. Really!
