World of Hyatt Credit Card benefit details and notes
Anniversary Free Night Award (Category 1-4)
- Issued 10 weeks after cardmember anniversary date
- Expires 1 year after issuance
- Ineligible for use with Club Lounge Access Awards and Complimentary Suite Upgrade Awards
- The spend counter for this benefit tracks total cumulative purchases during the current calendar year (excluding $95 annual fee and any other non-qualifying transactions).
- The spend counter for this benefit resets at the beginning of every calendar year. Chase does not make this spend counter visible to customers, so interested customers must calculate their own. Note that this is a separate spend counter from the "Two Additional Night Credits" spend counter below.
- Issued 1-2 days after statement closing date of the triggering transaction (the transaction causing the spend counter to cross $15k)
- Expires 1 year after issuance
- Ineligible for use with Club Lounge Access Awards and Complimentary Suite Upgrade Awards
- Cardmembers are eligible for only 1 Additional Free Night Award per calendar year (e.g., spending $30k does not result in two Additional Free Night Awards
- The spend counter for this benefit tracks total cumulative purchases since account opening (excluding $95 annual fee and any other non-qualifying transactions)
- This spend counter never resets. Chase does not make this spend counter visible to customers, so interested customers must calculate their own. Note that this is a separate spend counter from the "Additional Free Night Award" spend counter above.
- Issued 1-2 days after statement closing date of the triggering transaction (the transaction causing the spend counter to cross a multiple of $5k)
- For World of Hyatt status qualification purposes, the night credits are associated with the TRANSACTION date of the triggering transaction, not the posting date and not the statement closing date. For example, triggering transactions on 12/31/2022 (transaction date) will result in 2 night credits for the 2022 status year, regardless of posting date or statement closing date. Based on FT reports, transaction date appears to be based on the US Eastern Time Zone.
- World of Hyatt Credit Card: timing for $5k spend 2 qualifying nights
- 4 Bonus Points per $1 spent on purchases at Hyatt hotels
- 2 Bonus Points per $1 spent on restaurants, airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, local transit and commuting, and fitness club and gym memberships
- 1 Bonus Point per $1 spent on all other purchases
- Discoverist status every year
- 5 qualifying night credits every year
- No foreign transaction fees
- Travel & purchase coverage
Other notes and tips
Chase spending tracker
- The Chase spending tracker is useful for calculating your spend counter for the $15k Additional Free Night Award and your spend counter for the Two Additional Night Credits
- Chase mobile app: "View all transactions", then switch to the "Spending Summary" tab
- Chase website: From the main page, on the right hand side, click the "Spending & Budgeting" menu, then choose "Spending Summary"
- Remember to add spend from prior calendar year(s) as needed (see spend counter notes above), and to subtract $95 annual fee and any other non-qualifying transactions from all years
- Full list of non-qualifying transactions: returns, refunds, balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee

Did I miss this? Got a letter in the mail, in 2022, the 15k is counter will be annual (Jan 1 - Dec 31) and the spend counter reset to zero on Jan 1, 2022. In 2021, you can earn two 15k free nights, one counting spend from your 2020 anniversary to your 2021 anniversary (existing method) and another one from your 2021 anniversary date to Dec 31, 2021.
That being said, I think a lot of us w/mid-year anniversary dates could have earned two anyways? I.e., I will likely earn one in Jan, and if my work travel spend picks up, will probably earn another one in the fall as well. However, since the rules are changing, definitely added incentive to earn that added night before EOY.

I normally would not value the free night enough to justify putting $15k on the card (at the expense of earning URs, for example), but I will have a $4k head start for the current Oct-Dec spend promo. So if those $4k effectively count double (for two free nights), it might be worth going for $15k, e.g., by paying estimated taxes with the card for Q4 2020 and Q1 2021 and health insurance premiums. The math is getting tricky... and of course it very much depends on whether my understanding of the spend period (3/1/2020-2/28/2021) is accurate.

My old card renews on March 1. So I think what they are saying is that $15k spend from March 1, 2020 until Feb 28 2021 would earn me a free night.

A Chase rep told me that a PC does not change the anniversary date. The Chase rep could have been mistaken.
That was the way I read it, but take this as something short of a confirmation.

If that is the case, it's hardly worth trying to get two free nights - $30k is a lot to spend at least organically. Better option might be to put that on the normal Chase cards and then transfer the points later when you need them.

If I understand correctly, you would have to spend another $15k from March 1, 2021 until December 31, 2021 to collect your second free night for that year. Therefore your spending would not be double counted towards 2 free nights. You'd have to spend a total of $30k between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021. Can someone confirm that?
Bullet 1 says: From my account open anniversary date in 2020 (March 1) through my account open anniversary date in 2021 (March 1), I can earn a free night award by spending $15,000. That will be my free night #2.
Since the spend periods overlap (Oct 27-31, 2020 is wholly contained in March 1, 2020-Marc 11, 2021), the $4k spend for free night #1 should also count for free night #2.
So my interpretation is that I “only” need to spend an additional $11k for free night #2. Is that not right?
And then I can earn free night #3 by paying my annual fee in March (not clear if that will be $75 or $95; DoC had a story that the AF changes only in Aug 2021).
And finally I could earn free night #4 by spending an additional $15k between March 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021 (bullet 2). I am not convinced that it is worth the opportunity cost to earn this fourth free night. Will have to run some scenarios.

I signed up for and can earn a free night award by spending $4000 between Oct 27, 2020 and Dec 31, 2020. That will be my free night #1.

This is not an additional benefit, this shortens the window in 2021 to earn the free night for $15K in charges.
We could always earn a free night for $15K spend in a year. That doesn't change.
What has changed is your 2021 window to earn a free night for $15K spend has been shortened to: your anniversary date to the end of 2021. For people like me who have a January anniversary date, it's not a problem. But if you have a November/December anniversary date, your window to charge $15K for the free night is small.
Here's how it currently reads for the free nights:
1 free night every year
Receive one free night at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel or resort every year after your Cardmember anniversary. Footnote1(Opens Overlay)
+
1 additional free night
Earn an extra free night at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel or resort if you spend $15,000 during your Cardmember
anniversary year. Footnote2
The change will be that the 1 additional free night will be based on calendar year in the future.
Here is footnote 2:
Free Night Award After $15,000 in Purchases: For new accounts opened in 2020, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date until your anniversary date in 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. You will have from the day after your anniversary date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases to earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year. For new accounts opened in 2021, you, as the primary cardmember, will have from your account open date in 2021 through December 31, 2021 to spend $15,000 in purchases and earn a Free Night Award. On January 1, 2022 your spend total will reset to $0, and the time period for you to spend $15,000 to earn a Free Night Award will run from January 1 through December 31 of each calendar year. For all new accounts, purchases are when you, or an authorized user, use a card to make purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won’t count: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. This Free Night Award is good for one (1) night in any available standard room within 12 months of issuance at a Hyatt hotel or resort, Small Luxury Hotels of the World hotel, or M life Rewards destinations hotel designated as Category 1 through 4 under the World of Hyatt program. After qualifying, please allow up to 4 weeks for the Free Night Award to be issued to your World of Hyatt account at worldofhyatt.com(Opens Overlay). Not valid at properties in any other category or at Miraval, Hyatt Zilara or Hyatt Ziva resorts. To find Category 1 through 4 hotels or resorts, visit worldofhyatt.com(Opens Overlay). An authorized user will not receive this Free Night Award. Hyatt reserves the right to reclassify any hotel or resort at any time for any reason in its sole discretion (provided that reclassification of a hotel or resort will not affect a previously booked award reservation). This Free Night Award must be redeemed for a reservation with a checkout date before the expiration date of the award. This Free Night Award cannot be redeemed for packages. Resort, destination, or facility fees, where charged by the applicable hotel or resort, will be waived for cardmembers for the specific redeemed Free Night Award (excluding Hyatt Residence Club resorts). In some instances, a hotel or resort may charge other fees (such as a “service fee” for room service) that are independent of any resort, destination, or facility fee charged by that hotel or resort. These fees will not be waived when redeeming a Free Night Award. Reservations for this Free Night Award redemption are subject to availability and must be made in advance by visiting the My Awards page within your account at worldofhyatt.com(Opens Overlay), or by calling 888.75.HYATT or your nearest Hyatt Global Contact Center. Except as otherwise expressly set forth here, redemption of a Free Night Award is subject to all terms as set forth in the World of Hyatt terms and conditions, available at worldofhyatt.com/terms(Opens Overlay). Chase is not responsible for offer fulfillment or the provision of or failure to provide the stated benefits and services.

But you get a second shot at one in 2021. One "between your 2021 account open anniversary date and December 31, 2021."
In the switch to calendar year, they're stuffing another $15K=free night option in after your anniversary date before 12/31/21.

July 1 2020 to June 30 2021 = 1 free night for $15K charges.
July 1 2021 to December 31 2021 = 1 free night for $15K charges
I don't know how you get an extra night out of that; there's not an extra night.

I just received a letter telling me that they are going to upgrade my old Hyatt card to the new one.
I don't put much onto Hyatt because, prior to Covid, most of my business travel was to cities without a Hyatt. Now, there is no business travel at all. So I might have had only 3-4 stays a year prior to the big V. Thus, using the card was minimal at best. I would, given the current state of MSing, not get $15000 of spend in a year on the card.
I don't wish to upgrade the card for the extra $20 unless there is some compelling reason to do so. I think that the upgrade is being done where you actually have to decline it.
Before I do that, is there any compelling reason to just pay the $20 and do the UG. I can afford the $20, but would prefer not to squander money

The mailer from Chase says there will be a followup letter with details on the AF, so we’ll all know more shortly.

I didn't really say you get an extra night. I said you get a second shot in 2021. You have a short window in 2021 to earn a night. And then 2022 starts a new window.
