This thread is for the World of Hyatt Globalist members to share the experience of room (suite in particular) upgrades members receive at various Hyatt hotels and resorts. This is not about the suite upgrade by using TSU (Tier Suite Upgrade) certificate. It is discussed in a separate thread. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hyatt-world-hyatt/1825293-world-hyatt-globalist-experiences-tier-suite-upgrades.html

All WoH members receive two (2) Tier Suite Upgrade (Suite Upgrade Awards) certificates by reaching 50 Qualifying Nights or 80,000 Base Points Milestone Awards. By reaching 60 Qualifying Nights or 100,000 Base Points Milestone Awards, all WoH members also received two (2) additional Suite Upgrade Awards (TSUs) to a total of four (2) Suite Upgrade Awards (TSUs) each year. By earning the last Milestone Awards, the WoH member also reaches WoH Globalist status and receive other elite benefits.

By using the TSU awards, the suite upgrade (to standard suite) can be confirmed at booking or any other time before check-in. Most likely only standard suite can be confirmed. Without using the TSU awards, room upgrade normally can't be confirmed.

According to WoH membership terms, https://help.hyatt.com/en/hyatt-terms/world-of-hyatt-terms.html?icamp=woh_benefitbadges_terms#/VC

(c) Best Room Available: Globalists will receive the best room available at the time of check-in at Hyatt hotels and resorts, including Standard Suites and rooms with Club lounge-access. The best room available will be determined by the applicable hotel or resort in its sole discretion and may vary from stay-to-stay. The “best room” may, but will not necessarily be, of a room type/category higher than that booked by the Member. Best-room-available benefit includes only Standard Suites (where available), which are defined as rooms within each participating hotel’s or resort’s introductory suite category. Premium, Specialty, Premier, Presidential, Diplomatic, and other suites other than Standard Suites are not included in this benefit. Not valid at Caption by Hyatt, Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Destination Residences, or Hyatt Residence Club hotels and resorts.

Some Hyatt properties will automatically recognize WoH elite status and inform member about the room upgrade opportunity. If room upgrade is not mentioned at check-in time, then member needs to request at check-in time or any other time before room is assigned.

Small Luxury Hotels does not recognize most of the WoH elite benefits. So often, room (suite) upgrade is declined.

Why? The property has absolutely zero obligation to upgrade guests to a suite. T&Cs were drafted to expressly exclude any such obligation.

Yeah, I get that is how the terms are technically written, but seriously, if hotels are going to all start denying upgrades regardless of availability then we might as well just ****can this whole Hyatt enterprise right now.

I seriously doubt they wrote the T&C that way just to give their lawyers extra work.

Many properties were already ignoring best available room guaranty under GP. Not to mention the various inventory games many played to avoid having to make suites or award nights available for redemption.

IMO it's not at all realistic to expect all this to suddenly change under WoH. Keep in mind, no matter what Hyatt says, this is a devaluation, and it is all about reducing program costs.

Checked in to Hyatt Regency Lisle, given my usual King room (no Globalist suite upgrade). Asked politely whether all suites were booked and sure enough there was availability, keys swapped etc. Seemed like transition issues to/familiarity issues with the new program.

I think the point is (regardless of the marketing hype of WOH) that is a hotel which is inclined to play games with suite upgrades, including renaming large room, non-true suites as entry level suites for DSUs and not being inclined to give an upgrade into a suite in the first place, is not going to be any different under the new program.

Because it's not even the best available room, that's the Club Deluxe King which is 77sqm and the hotel has a history of denying the best available room benefit even before WoH.

Under WoH, "best available room" is determined exclusively at property's discretion:

Best Room Available: Globalists will receive the best room available at the time of check-in at Hyatt hotels and resorts, including standard suites and rooms with Club lounge-access. The best room available will be determined by the applicable hotel or resort in its sole discretion and may vary from stay-to-stay. The “best room” may, but will not necessarily be, of a room type/category higher than that booked by the Member.
In other words, if you book a dumpster view room, the property can tell you "in its sole discretion" that a dumpster view is the "best available room" and refuse to upgrade you, even if there are twelve higher category non-suite rooms available at check-in.

It is really surprising to me how many people don't understand what the new T&C mean, and in particular, don't realize that Hyatt has completely exempted all properties from any obligation to provide you anything beyond what you have booked, plus club access.

Being "ill-informed" is Hyatt's fault, not our fault.
Actually it would kill Hyatt(.com) considering they can't even keep their website functioning more than 24 hours at a time.

Checked into the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress tonight for one night using a category 4 award certificate. Initially front desk was telling me how I was upgraded to a lake view room in which I asked if any suites were available. Immediately he found an Executive Suite (standard suite) and expressed his pleasure being able to upgrade Globalists to suites without having to run it past management anymore.

But that is an "alternative" definition of "best" and it is meaningless. There is certainly some discretion possible in determining what the "best" room is, but that range of discretion is very narrow. I do not consider that wording to exempt any hotel to deny a decent upgrade if it is available. Maybe a little lying and deception regarding the suites, but if the Glob demands an upgrade and knows it is available and is denied, then maybe it is time for an "alternative definition" of payment.

I understand what you're saying, but can assure you that from a legal perspective, the new language imposes zero obligation on the property to upgrade a guest, regardless whether an objectively "better" room is available.

Courts enforce "sole discretion" language as granting absolute discretion, unbounded by any requirement of fairness or reasonableness.

I think the odds of a court becoming involved in a room upgrade dispute are pretty slim... still it is disappointing that the T&C were modified. Best approach is to take your business elsewhere when a property fails to meet expectations. To me, Hyatt has always been about underpromise and overdeliver. This has not changed with the WOH transition. My first WOH stay is in a lovely presidential suite.
