The basics of the challenge are simple.....

You apply, provide the required documentation, and accept your participation in the challenge (normally that's the date your challenge starts, if you would like to start on a specific date you need to be clear about that).

From the start date your status is reflected as Diamond and you get the 4 Diamond upgrades (might take a day or two for them to appear in your account). When the upgrades are in your account you can use them on an existing or any new reservations, but they will only work when suites are available and on paid stays (fully or partially paid like with the C&P option). If you are still Diamond on March 1st you will get another 4 upgrades, the unused ones you got before will disappear. If you meet the 12 nights in 60 days then your Diamond status will be extended to Feb 2015, otherwise it will end at the end of the month after 60 days.

So for your stay it seems best to accept the challenge as soon as possible so you will be able to use the Diamond upgrades. But don't start before your last intended stay minus 60 days if you don't intend to actually reach the 12 nights in 60 days.

But the suite availability needs to be there in the first place for your stays, don't just assume that by having a suite upgrade you will be able to get a suite. They only work for "basic" suite types (depending on the property).

Just want to add that it's suite UPGRADE availability - just because an entry suite is available for revenue doesn't mean it's available for upgrades.

A tip to add.. When you receive the suite upgrades, you may apply the DSUs to reservations after the expiry date. No changes allowed otherwise you relinquish the suite upgrades. New DSUs you receive after March 1, reservations made prior to expiry, changes may be accommodated.

I have 4 award cert that expire on Feb 28th. Are you saying I can use them for a reservation that I have already booked in August?

You can apply suite upgrade certificates (I'm not sure about free night awards from the credit card) before they expire to reservations made for after they expire.

However, you will not be allowed to change the reservation or you will lose the certificates.

FWIW - I WAS able to change without losing them. I didn't ask, and customer service didn't volunteer. However, I was only shortening my stay, not changing it.

right now my plan is the following
4 nights Park Hyatt Goa (first March 4th)
2 nights Grand Hyatt Bombay
6+x nights Hyatt Regency Cancun (last stay around April 4th)

So Ill book all the rooms by the end of next week and let them start my challenge around February 8th. After that Ill burn the 3-4 upgrade certificates BEFORE March 1st. I will not make any changes with the bookings and I will get 4 new suite upgrades for the time from March 2014 until end of February 2015, does this make sense? Just checking that I got it all right.

Correct.

Max 7 nights per DSU, so if you 6+x nights at Hyatt Regency Cancun exceeds 7 nights, then you'll have to redeem an additional DSU. Looks like you have 3 reservations utilizing 3 DSUs prior to March 1st, so if you need one more DSU, then you've got it.. prior to expiry.

I would try and apply that 4th DSU to a future reservation, which can be made up to approximately a year ahead.

With the Chase Hyatt credit card, one gets 10 night credits after spending $40k on the card.

Do the 10 night credits from the credit card count toward the 12 nights of the Diamond challenge?

No, those 12 nights need to be accomplished by actually staying.

They count towards the regular Diamond qualification.... for those without access to the credit card, that seems quite a decent offer.

I'm getting conflicting information regarding suite UG on the challenge. Do you receive the suite UG before completing the challenge or strictly after you complete the 12 nights? Thanks

HI Mary - I was able to get one certificate applied to a booking in August and waiting to hear back about 2 other bookings. So far, a savings of 450 euros.

thanks!

You receive DSUs when your Challenge is enacted. You can use the DSUs on reservations during your Diamond Challenge.
