Dollars. And the top shelf liquor is Stoli, Johnny Walker, Bombay, and yes beer and wine included. With several bars to choose from. But please do not go expecting much from the beach at this location. It mixes with a river so it is not very appealing.

Well, at $62 a night, 6 nights would be $372. Doesn't make sense to use points at that rate.

How much did it cost to get back/forth from the airport to the resort?

You need to rent a car. They come with GPS although there are only a few may roads if you can call them that. The doubletree has signs throughout pointing the way. And let me tell you, driving a car in Costa Rica is an adventure all its own!
BTW the resort is about a 2 hour drive from the airport. Its really a nice drive.

According to a post by the manager in Trip Advisor, there is going to be a new highway opening sometime in 2010 that will cut down the travel time to the resort from 2 hours to 45 minutes. I would assume it will also make it easier to find the resort!

I have family going there in August. Is there any way to get there from SJO without renting a car?

They don't drive in the States, much less CR.

There is a bus that stops just outside the airport that will take you most of the way - say within a couple of hundred yards.

I suggest that you write to the Concierge and request details of the bus (Route number, timings, etc.).

I caught the bus for the return trip to the airport and the service is very convenient.

However, depending upon the time of day, the bus may be very full with workers on their way to/from work.

As a Diamond I recieved a fruit basket, a suite upgrade, and a platinum colored bracelet that gave me free access to what they called premium booze. Casino on site, and if you have kids, their are many programs for them as well. I gained 5lbs in 3 days there.
Is this perk only for Diamond or would Gold qualify for premium booze?

Airport Transfers

FYI, I wrote to the hotel and this is their reply:
I can recommend you two companies in our country Interbus ( Phone number: 506 22835573 or fax 506 22837655 or by email: www.interbusonline.com), the other one is Grayline ( Phone number is 506 22902126, www.grayline.com), you can contact them directly. You can pay , using a credit card or cash.

I can look for a good and trustee driver, someone that we really know, the price is $ 90 one way. You have to pay in cash.

Another option, our tour office that is Swiss Travel arrange transportation and they have insurance, $ 50 per person and if there are coming more than 3 people the price is $35 per person, the company has a minivan, very comfortable. It is very trustee. Please let me know if you want to use this service because we can send you a fax where you can prepaid the transportation and what we need is your flight information.

I recently stayed at the DT in SJO and thought it was a dump. They didnt treat me very well as a Diamond member and put me in a "pool view" room that had no view of the pool (blocked by bushes). The hallways also smelled of dead fish. The only positive thing I can say about the hotel is that the managers reception with the person who was helping everyone was very nice and the guy was very friendly. Also, they charge for alcohol at the managers reception which is not typical of a foreign HH property. If I were to return to SJO I would stay just about anywhere but here especially at $100+ a night.

Best Hotel in SJO CR?

I notice there is a HGI and DT in SJO. We plan to spend 2 nights in SJO to see the local sites and volcano(s) with our 2 kids. Which is preferred in terms of quality, breakfast (lounge) food and pool/amenities?
thx.

Hello sram, do you have any experiences to share? Yours is the most contemporary thread and I and am sure others will be interested in a more recent update.

TIA...

How was your stay at HGI in SJO. Could you post a trip report thinking of staying here in summer. Thanks

Anyone ever stay at the Gran Hotel downtown? We have 2 nights there next week. Looks nice...the property page references an Executive Lounge but no way to directly book an Executive Level room. (I did some test queries in the distant future - no room types reference lounge access.)

Trying to figure out if a lounge actually exists or, if not, what the Diamond breakfast situation is.
