Time to resurrect an old thread about Costa Rica
I see there is a Doubletree, has anyone stayed here?
How is it?
How do you get here?
How do you get from the airport to the hotel?
Cheers,
Jon

I rented a car and it was only a 5-10 minute ride from the airport. The entrance was a bit hard to see behind bushes in the dark but after passing it, I turned around and found it easily. It is a nice hotel and beats the Hamptons at the airport. The Hhonors site suggests a taxi for $18. I was headed to Manuel Antonio the next day so needed a car and had no problem getting around. Otoh, the Hilton site http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/...Z400CSGBJNM22Q says the recent earthquake didn't cause any damage to the hotel, but who knows about the surrounding roads?

I stayed at the DT Puntarenas last year with the family. The beach was terrible, but the diamond upgrade to a suite and premium liquor was nice(all inclusive property). Decent food, great pool, superb activities for kids, and a casino for adults. I am planning to go back in July.

I stayed at Doubletree Carriari 2 days in Dec 2008. It is between the airport and SJ. Very nice hotel. The Exec Launge food-wise is reasonable in the morning, very good in eve. They have a fenced parking area with a guard.
They are on a road parallel to the main road. Tricky to get to if you are on the "wrong side", but was easy with a GPS.

I assume you mean the DT Cariari by the airport not the DT Puntarenas. I stayed at the Cariari when it was a Sol Melia hotel but if you search Cariari, you should pull up a couple threads discussing it after the rebrand to DT. It gets decent reviews.

Thinking of it but flying on UA is a pain as they fly only once a week

We have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and the beach doesn't matter.
How is the crime?
Any other tips you can offer are appreciated.
Cheers

In my opinion, not a good idea to resurrect this old thread, particularly you really have a much more specific group of questions, about a specific property. (Guidelines say best not to bring up a thread over two years old unless it is relevant.)
A better place to look, which revealed itself when I used Advanced Search, search titles only for "Puntarenas," is this thread, where some members already took some time to share their experience.
As to crime, not much in Puntarenas. One can get there relatively easily from San José or even from Liberia, if one is renting / hiring a car.

Like I said, great activities for kids(nightly childrens games) and adults, food is ok buffet style with two specialty restuarants. Premium liquor and fruit plate for diamonds, and you should get a suite.
They have a travel guru on site that can help with excursions. Many islands around to explore and make day trips out of. Overall I think it is a great family resort. The kids will really like the 3 feet long iguanas that roam the pool areas. They love to be fed mangos.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Yeah, that's the one... ^^ sorry I couldn't include that information earlier... I was posting from my blackberry and find the hhonors site difficult to navigate on a mobile (while the mobile version of flyertalk rocks!)
Anyway, has anyone on the board stayed here?

They're offering all-inclusive stays for $62/night... or 5-night stays for 200k points. Was thinking of running down to Costa Rica for a little fun in the middle of the summer...

As a Diamond I recieved a fruit basket, a suite upgrade, and a platinum colored bracelet that gave me free access to what they called premium booze. Casino on site, and if you have kids, their are many programs for them as well. I gained 5lbs in 3 days there.

Did the premium booze include wine ...or was it just top shelf liquor at the poolside bars?
