According to the fine print, absolutely. With regard to actual impact on customers, not so much.

Hilton Moorea went from 70k points per night to 165k. Most likely leaving Hilton after this.

But a 30k cap still seems to be holding even on a night that otherwise would be $300 or more.

Points and cash is completely gutted. But we all knew it would be as soon as they announced it would be linear.

There used to be some nice so called bargains using all pts, especially cat4 (20-30, in their low season. I used 20k instead of paying $150+, now its a roll of the dice every time = at least for me I wont be using any pts unless rates are simply thru the roof for all the chains and if the new HH max works out in my favor which wont be the case most times, soi it seems in most cases I will have to pony up more pts then I previously had to if I want that so called free night (which is anything but free)

I simply see Hilton now as offering a refund of the $s I spend by giving me back 1/2 cent per $1 spent to be used towards a so called free night or partial free night.

Having dropped Hyatt I came back to Hilton seems my stay will be extremely short, with 20 Stays thus far I will do the remaining 10 to be Diamond then use up the pts and not look back.

One HH property I've enjoyed staying at in the past on weekend trips is the Hampton Truckee/South Lake Tahoe in California. In the past it has been 30k offseason, 40k high season. With this change it's now 60k/night on weekends.

Doubletree Times Square NYC now as low as 49,000 in the winter. Nice properties in NYC as low as 30,000. Previously it was impossible to find NYC less than 60,000.

The standard reward points in NYC usually wasn't fewer than 60,000. However, for those taking the time to look thru all the rates would find some nice easter eggs. I stayed Sat & Sun night Superbowl weekend at a Hilton Garden Inn for 36,000 per night. A Hampton was going for around 32k per night, same weekend.

I'm ok with devaluation outrage. But I'm surprised now that people seem to be surprised.

From the day they announced this, the math was pretty much knowable.

Totally agree. And it doesn't help that people appear to be looking for and posting their findings related solely to devaluations. Those that are hellbent on finding and posting devals seem to be overlooking and ignoring hotels in their posts where you can get better point rates than before. A few have even gone as far as posting specifics on devals (hotels names, before and after rates)...then hinting ever so slightly they found better rates at other hotels without posting any info.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to everyone as some have posted positive changes!

Well, I ended up saving 44,000 points on my Hong Kong Conrad stay in December-going from 160,000 to 116,000-so this actually worked out well for me. I changed from a superior to a classic room, but there is no difference in description. Maybe I saved because it is right before Christmas, or because it is so far out-still, 44,000 is a BIG difference! And I will still be diamond at that point, hopefully, I will get a super room from that as my diamond status here in the US has done nothing.

Another data point, comparing an existing two night points + money booking I have at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Boston Logan Airport Chelsea with the new system.

Current booking: $189.89 + 40,000 points
New system: $314.64 + 40,000 points

This is for a "Standard Room Reward". Good grief.

Neil

Yes, it also looks to me that the old Points + Money is basically dead and was replaced with Points + so much money that you'll either spend all points or switch to another chain.

The old Points + Money was so rare for me that losing it is really the least of my concerns. In its entire history, I managed to find exactly one P+M award: Conrad HKG for 3 nights a couple years ago.

Those were a fantastic value to be sure, but they were a needle in a haystack to begin with.

Couldn't agree more. In all my searches so far, I've only seen one increase of 4,000 points. All the rest have gone down.

That particular hotel is known for sticking to a one-category upgrade rule for Diamonds. I can't complain too much...my C&P stay there was in some basic room type and I was on (or maybe one floor above?) the lounge floor. But I remember them citing the 1-category rule when I asked about other room types. This was at check-in in the lounge itself, since Diamonds can skip the front desk.

Just something to keep in mind if classic is technically a downgrade from superior.

Prices seem to fluctuate constantly.
Hilton Millennium Bangkok was 22k this morning, 19k a few hours later and now 30k for a standard room award...??

They are using the Uber method. Surge pricing based on invisible supply and demand. :D

This could be the IT working itself out. Or, for properties that are at or around the 1/2 cent per point range of the cap for cash reservations, this may be the new normal. Point prices now will likely be as dynamic as cash, since the two are tied for many reservations.
