Ways to waive Additional Driver...

Is there a way to add an additional driver without a fee? I'm a Gold member. I was wondering if I could have the additional driver sign up for Gold if (my sister) could get the fee waived on my rental. I know the AAA CDP is one way but I don't have an active membership through AAA I only have the cards they keep sending now and again I also know about the Gold Family CDP, but im not sure how to do that and whether that would even work or not.

Also if the above methods don't work, can I add an additional driver later?

Yes - you can add an additional driver at anytime during the rental, and at any Hertz location, the fee charged will be proportional to the remaining rental period.

In the UK and Europe we cant even have our spouses driving unless we pay a fee.

Where are you renting? Some jurisdictions have cracked down on additional driver fees. As such, some locations have become very liberal with allowing free additional drivers -- more liberal than the laws.

You could call the location and ask them their policy.

This would be at PDX in a couple of weeks, but the rental would be for 3 days total. I'll call just to see what they say though.

Would you know if they would need any proof?

Share the Wheel Without Paying for Additional Drivers

A good article to read...and, btw, if you are renting in my state, California, by law, there is no extra driver fee at any rental company.

Anyone can drive the car; the issue really comes in if stopped by police or have an accident; the car doesn't have any id requirements to start engine etc

If the person turns out not to work for the same company ( in regions where work colleagues are permitted automatically ) and an accident occurs , then the renter will be in the same mess that they would be in by letting any other unauthorised driver operate the vehicle when unable to prove that the driver was eligable to drive

Absolutely, which is why I want to add an additional driver and do it by the rules, etc. Although I was thinking about it, i dont want to risk it just to save a couple of bucks.

ime, when I go to desk to add a driver they do ask if it is someone from same company since if the person is, there is no need to explicitly list that person and that there is no charge. since the person doesn't meet that criteria, I just have the person explicitly added; depending on the rate paid, there may be a charge, there may not be

If worried about the few $ , then just do all the driving yourself

The problem is the additional driver will keep the car longer than I will be in town and I wanted the a.d. to keep it for the whole duration so they don't have to re rent somewhere else, although it will probably come down to that. Im assuming though if I was with a "coworker" that I would need a cdp/rq/etc. from the company??

You do not have to have a CDP for that company

If it was me, I would suggest either (a) getting it in their name up front or (b) returning and renting another in their name when you leave

That way you do not have the liabilities on the car for damage/fines etc once you leave
