There's a Thai place that was recommended to us by a hotel employee, but we didn't make it there and now I can't remember the details. I think they said it was in Kihei?
And of course Star Noodle if that counts... |

Coming from SoCal I am not impressed with the selection of Asian restaurants on Maui. I stick to more local stuff and get my Asian fix here.

Hula Grill is Not a merriman restaurant
It's part of a California chain restaurant group called TS Restaurants Yes, it is a TS restaurant but, Peter Merriman does have a management role on it-we had the Merriman's special last week at the Hula Grill |
Talking about the Hula Grill, they had a salad with goat's cheese and bacon that was absolutely to die for! Loved it. The rest of the meal was good, but overpriced.
Generally, I wasn't blown away by any of our food options except that store at Ulupalakua. That was probably the best food we had our entire trip and when we go back, we will make a special lunch trip. Prices for everything was very comparable to where I live so I'm not giving restaurants a break from the "but it's an island so everything is going to be more expensive" excuse. One night we just kinda wondered Front street without having any concrete plans for dinner and we ended up at Captain Jack's or something along that line. Rudest staff I have ever encountered anywhere. Menus were thrown down on the table and we were brushed off and ignored when we asked a simply question so we left and ended up at Lahaina pizza company. That was very good. No complaints there. ETA: Snowbird friends of ours took us to Eskimo Candy (?) in Kihei, but hubby was very disappointed to find out just about all their fish was previously frozen. |
We ate at a ton of places during our most recent visit. We hit a lot of the old favorites, but Monkeypod was a new one for me, and turned out to be my favorite. Pita Paradise next door to it was a pleasant surprise too (though it was really loud in there, hard to have a conversation).

Also, Gannon's was the big disappointment. We love Hali'imaile General Store, so expected to love Gannon's. The food was ok, but the service was abysmally slow, and it was eerily dead there. I don't know if that's normal, but it surprised us and I don't think we'd be likely to go back unless we heard something had changed. Were they just having an off night?

We like Pita Paradise a lot.

Agree on Mama's Fish House.
My only knock on Mama's is their lack of aloha to the large ohana. They will not take reservations for more than 8, and will not take split party reservations. So if you want a large family meal/celebration, Mama's is not for you. |
Breakfast on Maui
I know this is pretty random but many years ago we went to a small unassuming restaurant on the coast for incredible macadamia nut pancakes and Portugese sausage. I remember it being quite a drive up the coast from Kaanapali. The whale watching was great. Any ideas?

Is it The Gazebo in Napili? I didn't get there last year, but it's still on my restaurant list.

Thank you!
That's it! Thank you. Any other restaurants on your list? We're in Wailea this time but it worth the drive.

Mama's and Monkeypod Were Enjoyable

Well, I like Mama's, but Ferraro's at the Four Seasons in Wailea has an even better setting, literally. It's outside, right off the beach, and you get to watch what are usually gorgeous sunsets at dinner if you start by 6 pm.
We loved the scene at Mama's and the service. My wife loved the food also. I'm not a seafood person so it wasn't my favorite but I certainly appreciated the place. On a totally different note, we enjoyed Monkeypod's atmosphere as it was more modern than some other places we visited. We liked breakfast at Sarento's On the Beach. It was a short ride from the Andaz. Our table was almost literally on the beach and yet the prices weren't bad if I remember correctly and the food was tasty. |

Really? I'm adding it to my list. Been to Maui twice but missed Ferraro's. Will have to hit it next time.

OTOH, I loved Gannon's Lanai CIty grill, surprising since it's basically the only real restaurant on Lanai that's not in one of the two Four Seasons hotels, and I'd suspect that Gannon's supervision of the place is less robust, given it being a remote outpost on Lanai |
