The Longhi's I was referring to was the original one in Lahaina. I've only been to the one in Wailea once for lunch and it was good. One of the things I look forward to when I go Maui is not driving so 95% of the time I stay in Lahaina and walk/golfcart my way around town, so there are still a lot of restaurants esp. in South Maui where I've never been.
Believe it or not, I've also never been to Roy's in Kahana! (same reason as above) but I've heard good things. I've been to the one in Oahu and the Big Island as well as several on the mainland. Always good. IMO worth going just for the chocolate souffle. ^ |

He's reading and writing so he can read the store front names. Longhi's at Wailea is good.. but no longer there.. its' a Tommy Bahama's now. That does it! Mark me down at Roy's Kahana next year.. we've got our flights already booked on Aeroplan Rewards (ahead of the July 15th, 2011 mileage chart changes). |

Unless something has changed dramatically in the last few months, Tommy Bahama is upstairs and Longhi's is directly below.

That's the second thing that goes at our age. :(
For example, we did YYC-HOU 5 nights layover, HOU-PHX-KOA, open jaw 14 nights, one way flight from KOA-OGG, 5 nights in OGG, OGG-YYC Direct flight.. this last spring break, and just got back 8 days ago. The entire trip was redeemed on 40,000 pt classic award.. so stopover, plus open jaw. Phew!.. and to boot, I had 3 car rental reservations, stayed at 5 different hotels, ate at pretty much 25 different restaurants with 2 kids.. plus breakfast buffet at certain hotels, and the hotels we didn't eat breakfast, I grocery shopped. Stopped at 4 different Walmarts.. Houston, San Antonio, Kona, and Maui.. Short of cleaning my 5 year old sons upchuck in the van, I thought I was going fatigued. But it was a fantastic trip for the entire family.. So we'll be at it again in July.. 14 nights Riviera Maya, stopover LAX for 11 nights, all on one reward.. not as complex as this last spring break.. so hopefully can R and R a bit more. |
Has anyone eaten at a "new" restaurant in Maui this year (one not mentioned in this thread and opened w/in the last 12 months)? We'll be there in Jan. and would like a "new" experience.
Mahalo! |
Just back from 5 nights in Lahaina and have to recommend Star Noodle. We ate dinner there twice during our stay, and I probably could have eaten there every night and not been sad about it. It's a small space, so be prepared to wait...especially if you come with a group. We were given a 20-30 minute wait time, but they got us seats at the bar/counter in 10ish minutes both nights. Everything is served family style so its better to go with more people as you can try more things ... and definitely try the pork buns :)
Had one dinner at Roy's Kahana (which will be moving to the Ka'anapali Golf Course sometime next month). The chocolate souffle was awesome as always, but I wasn't feeling the love quite as much as I have in the past. I had emailed the restaurant ahead of time as my fiance was celebrating a significant birthday, and our "special treatment" was an extra amuse bouche, a bit of confetti on the table, and a birthday mini-dessert at the end. This is in contrast to my not-as-significant birthday dinner at Roy's Las Vegas last year where they printed a special take home menu noting the occasion, took a photo of me with my special dessert and then presented it to me in a little frame when they gave me the special menus. There may have been singing by the staff, but I don't remember... there was much liquor involved. Lulu's was our go-to breakfast spot. Lots of locals, great food, and friendly service. They brought us a plate of malasadas on the house the 2nd morning ... which was a smart move on their part because it prompted us to order them ourselves next 3 mornings after that. |
We driven by a couple of times past Roy's in Kahana.. how is this Roy's compared to others?
Perhaps, your SO got the man's version of significant birthday.. still sounds over and above what most restaurants would do.. |

Then I had to specifically ask for the server to see the prix fixe menu, which Roy's is pretty famous for. All my other dining experiences it was either printed on the regular menu, or at least brought with the regular menu. The food was on par with my other Roy's experiences. For comparison, I've dined at: Roy's Poipu (multiple visits) Roy's San Diego (multiple visits) Roy's La Jolla Roy's Las Vegas (E Flamingo Rd location) Roy's Seattle (back when we had a Roy's here) |
The Roy's in Kahana has been off our dining list for years. We usually go out for an upscale dinner every night on our several annual visits to Maui.
We tried them a couple times and for the prices they charge we didn't consider the experience up to par. The food was fine but the restaurant was too brightly lighted, the table too close together and it was too loud. And if I remember correctly....it's been years since we've been there....there weren't even tablecloths. For that extra special dining experience on Maui I can't think of a better place than Gerard's in Lahaina. We've been going there consistently for two decades and they've never ceased to please. |

Best Sunday Brunch on Maui
We frequent Oahu and love the Sunday brunches at the Halekulani and Kahala there. Would like to know if there are similar brunches in Maui that are highly recommended..thanks
|
Probably Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel, although I don't really do sunday brunch much.
