Doesn't sound as worrisome -- right now anyway -- as first feared.

The County has set up a new website to aggregate all the information:

Ti leaves, 'ohelo berries and a bottle of the finest gin, tied up in a red scarf and dropped in the lava flow as an offering to Mme. Pele will please her and spare us all from her wrath.

In case you've come across this thread, check the website for current conditions http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/hvostatus.php
Since 8/07, the lava currently is moving ENE, well inland of the ocean and is unviewable except from a helicopter. The area is closed to hikers due to the unstable surface of the lava you would have to walk on to get there. We call it "shelly" pahoehoe, and it has a thin upper surface you can break thru as you walk on it.

Did the helicopter thing in August. It was great as the pilots can get your great views of the flowing lava.

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island Civil Defense officials warned today that a finger of lava has been moving toward the remnants of the Royal Gardens subdivision in Lower Puna and now poses a threat to the upper portion of the remaining homes there....

Flow returns to largely abandoned Royal Gardens

by Peter Sur
Tribune-Herald Staff Writer
Pele is on the move.

A new and vigorous 'a'a lava flow was moving at 300 feet an hour toward the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision in Lower Puna, volcanologists said Thursday.

The flow's velocity was estimated by how far it had progressed between helicopter overflights at 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, said Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist-in-charge Jim Kauahikaua.

"If it continues at this rate, it will easily be into Royal Gardens by midnight," Kauahikaua said Thursday. Another helicopter overflight is planned this morning.....

There are still a couple houses, including one which was quite nice - and quite a few folks living in trailers, tents and other temporary structures to remain bonded with their property.

I hope the fingers works its way through without touching anything habitable.

This afternoon the radio folks were saying that everybody was out of Royal Gardens except one guy who was going to stay as long as there wasn't any immediate threat, and that the flow seemed to have stopped advancing.

Ultimately, it's a good thing for it to be heading south, and downhill, instead of the northeasterly path it was slowly taking before (toward far, far more populated areas). But it'd be good if it went more south and missed Royal Gardens.

She's such a tease.....

Lava stalls within yards of Hawaii homes

Volcano stirring
Activity at Big Island's Kilauea is heightening as the eruption of the island's youngest volcano entered a new phase.

The latest Kilauea 'a'a lava flow stalled yesterday within three-tenths to four-tenths of a mile from the Royal Gardens subdivision but the upper part of the flow "is still very much active," according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A flyover of the subdivision showed eight remaining homes and structures, said Duane Hosaka, interim administrative officer for Hawai'i County Civil Defense....
