Hi, thanks for your report! I was going to update the wiki but wanted to clarify, do you mean you had bids accepted for 6 seats? Or got one seat confirmed with 6 seats available in the cabin?

What do you think my chances are?

I am flying from PHX-HNL on Hawaiian Airlines. I was unable to pick a seat because all showed as FULL when I bought the ticket. I still can't pick a seat (all show as full). I got an email from Hawaiian Airlines today asking if I wanted to bid to upgrade to first class.

I checked ExpertFlyer and it shows 2 single First Class seats available (not next to each other).

Lowest Bid Allowed: $255
My Bid: $305

I almost never fly alone, but I'm going out to care for my mom who just had knee surgery. To make matters worse, I have anxiety disorder. I'm not afraid of flying at all, but the whole process (all the rules, the crowds, being too close to people I don't know, and having the back of someone's seat reclined in front of me) are all triggers for me. Now, not having a seat assignment at all and possibly getting stuck in the middle seat in coach all makes me feel more anxious.

So, when I got the offer to upgrade, I jumped at it. What do you think my chances are w/only going $50 above minimum. Top bid would have been $800.

I was wondering if anyone has had successful bid up to first class at a lower price if they have already paid the $80 for the upgrade to an extra comfort seat.

is it possible to revise or cxl bid once you've entered it? and normally when do you get the notification that you got upgraded or it didn't work? 48 hrs?

So I just received an E-Mail to bid on an upcoming trip of 4 from OGG to OAK.
Just so I understand this right:

If you pay for a ticket the price difference today between Extra Comfort (which we are booked in) and First is $150 on our date.

Now the upgrade bid starts at >$205 and goes up to $750. Please, please can someone tell me that this is the total for 4 people. Because if this is per person, why would anyone do this when booking F straight away is cheaper than hoping for an upgrade.

It was more of a rhetorical question. If I buy First outright it is cheaper than buying what I bought and bidding for an upgrade. That just doesn't make sense.

I received the bid-up email today for flight HNL-SYD. Bidding starts at $840 with that amount the prospect being 'poor'. For 'excellent' the suggested bid was $2400. It only cost $1000 extra at the time of original purchase (I decided not to bother). Shame on you HawaiianAir.

to be fair, there probably was more inventory when you originally checked, and therefore lower prices. Reduced inventory and a sense of urgency inflates prices.

Good point but it has been the same price since I booked. IE I can change fee for $100 and get the upgrade for $1000 outright. Ok that is more but I suppose what I am saying is they aren't offering any bargains or special pricing.

I thought it might be helpful for others - as I was watching with curiosity and I would have bid had it been $500-600

I bid on $310 on 2 first class upgrades for 8/6 from HNL to LAS after I had already paid for extra comfort seats. I was unsuccessful. I was not notified until the morning of my flight.

However, there were still first class seats available and I upgraded the 2 seats when checking in online for $299 each.

In my opinion it is better to wait until check in if you are a platinum or gold member.

Unsuccessful

I'm sure traveling during labor day weekend attributed to my denial just a bit. Upon check in, they were completely sold out for that particular flight. But had 2 comfort seats available for $80(per seat).

Successful OGG-SEA

Bid $375 (considered "fair") for HA 30 from OGG to SEA and to my amazement, it was accepted. Hopefully it'll have the lay flat config instead of the old seats like on my flight over here.

OGG-LAX - $335 accepted. Minimum was about $250, my bid was in the upper "poor" range.

I booked First on my departure flight and regretted not booking both directions so decided to take a chance on a bid. Can't recall what the cost at booking was.

Looks like the moral of the story is - take the good/fair/poor/etc markers with a grain of salt. Since they're just fixed cutoff points that don't change with demand, a lot of the time they only function to trick you out of more money.
