It’s been deflation. European Y awards used to be 50 k... OTOH awards on other than AY are more expensive now.

Yes indeed. Japan, HKG and Singapore upgrades went from 60 000 to 50 000, and the earning on those routes went from 17 500 to 16 000 like other earnings on long haul routes.

I wonder... in this year's Blue Wings issues there's a section "What's new this month?" where they announced the upcoming improvements and now the change in points expiration. Will they keep on announcing minor improvements/enhancements every month?

I do hope they will find other ways of communicating these changes, both to the members and to customer services....

More rewarding features are coming up later this year. For example, we’ll make it easier for families and friends to pool points together and track their progress to a dream reward. We’ll also launch the revamped Finnair Plus Junior program in the spring. More details are coming in April – don’t miss out!

Just got the email:
In 2018, Finnair Plus becomes even more rewarding.
From 31 March 2018 onwards Finnair Plus members' award points will not expire – regardless of when they were earned – as long as there's at least one point transaction every 18 months.
For Finnair Plus Platinum members, the point expiry remains unchanged: your points will not expire as long as you are a Platinum member. However, if you don’t renew your Platinum status and your tier is downgraded, the point validity will be calculated from your last point transaction, or set to three months if you have not been active within the last 18 months.
Stay tuned for other upcoming changes this year!

Right, so nothing changes, but still more valuable. Maybe they should employ a professional copywriter. OR even better, make AY+ even more valuable for Plats, too. Just a suggestion.

Non-expiring points and pooling points makes AY+ more attractive for the infrequent flyers. Those who fly once or twice a year can now use their points for award flights and upgrades (unlike before, as their points expired). As a result it will get more difficult to get awards.
It's been clear here already for quite a while that AY+ is targeting the segment of infrequent flyers. The ongoing raffle is another piece of evidence for that.
In Finland credit cards providing points are not very common. AY+ could launch a campaign with one of the Mastercard providers to promote their credit cards to the general public. Even if you would fly only every now and then, the average household spend would give you enough points for occasional flight awards.
