TPG had others writing well before OMAAT did AFAIK.

I believe that is correct.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that on the "Looking to be a writer at TPG" page, the "interns" in the background look high school age.

In addition, notice the same article mentions TPG's office is in a high rise in NYC. That means he is bringing in some serious bank (as we all know a cardboard box in NYC will run you $1,000 a night =p) to afford that kind of rent, which also explains how Kelly affords to fly first class for "free" every week.

Of course, there is serious money in affiliate marketing and advertising if one plays their cards right.

Brian has not owned TPG for some time. Wouldn't it make more sense that BankRate is giving them office space? In an interview Brian stated that he leverages BankRate resources.

Yes it would, considering the insane rent prices. I would also go out on a limb and say that he "leverages BankRate resources" for all these expensive trips.

Over the last 5+ years it was possible to churn through quite a few credit card promotions over and over. Considering if one opened 4+ new cards a quarter you could have easily amassed a "fortune" in miles. Not to mention charging business expenses on a mileage/points accumulating card.

In addition, redemptions tend to be less complicated when just redeeming one ticket for one person and have a "flexible" schedule. In most instances, of course.

Heck, my son just turned 18 and he applied and got approved for an AA Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World MasterCard®. It's not one of the best new card bonuses but only wanted to apply for one with a low spend ($1000, 3 months).

New Customer BonusEarn 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles after spending $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of cardmembership.
It's his first "solo" credit card that is not one of ours.

Also started my daughter (20) off this year in April. So far, she's applied for and gotten approvals for a Delta Platinum AMEX (that had a useful MQM bonus and RDM bonus), Chase Sapphire and Citi Prestige. All in her name personally. Spend wasn't as much of an issue, since she was able to pay her "Sorority housing bill" with the Chase and Citi (and no fee for using her credit card for paying the bills). Smart kid.

Above are just examples of college kids, with minimal employment.

I'd rather just use cash and not have the temptation to overspend / spend money I don't have.

buying gift cards costs dollars, if not free

presumably marriott does not give points away to same degree as others (credit card/selling/bonus/etc) while requiring a lot. RC awards went up once they started allowing earning at RC. (always had awards.)

I scored 286,000 Marriott points off of 140k Ritz Carlton bonus for wife and I. Pretty much giving them away

He uses a WeWork, doesn't he? There was a photo a few weeks ago.

What throws me a little about TPG is that I write 3 articles a day, 7 days a week, with no staff (plus handle over 100 emails) but he needs a huge team to produce 5 articles a day.

As expressed earlier in the thread with the Etihad Residence picture, office in NYC, going so far as to perform elaborate measures to appear in Vice, etc., Kelly seems to be vastly overstating the true operational depth and popularity of The Points Guy.

In fact, if you read the Vice article again, you'll notice that Kelly is quoted as trying to appear on the same level as international celebrities such as Channing Tatum or Angelina Jolie in terms of popularity, which really isn't the case.

To be fair to Brian, I am also nosying around the new WeWork in London as a potential base so I won't knock him for that. I haven't yet seen a woman under 30 whilst working out of Regus for 3 years and it isn't good for my mental health :-)

wework in Amsterdam looks nice, though my favorite venue is always a casino VIP lounge. Alas, not much of that happening these days. (though, I had a great workspace and free flowing drinks up to $50/shot last weekend at my favorite casino and VIP lounge in the USA...)

I'm rather fortunate, as I have a separate office (and guest loft) that is rather private and quite functional. Also has a roof deck and views of planes approaching Schiphol on certain days.
