I'm flying this route next week, and I got the same minimum bids. Is this worth it? What do people think? It seems like a slightly more comfortable bed for the red eye, and better champagne? Are the wines that much better? Is the food significantly better? There are two of us, we we were thinking we could spend $100 each on a good meal and still come out $1000 ahead.

Received my upgrade email yesterday. The minimum bids were:
ORD-AUH 1190.00
AUH-JNB 550.00
JNB-AUH 550.00
AUH-ORD 1190.00
Didn't bid on them. In grad school right now so too expensive for me right now. Excited for my spring break in JNB

That's what I ultimately decided, too. Thanks for the advice. And I've had Johnny Walker Blue once. It was good, but I can get by just fine with cheaper booze. I'll save my money.

$950 USD at check-in is for NRT-AUH, not AUH-NRT. NRT-AUH is scheduled at 12 hours 50 minutes (although often actually faster than this) where AUH-NRT is 10 hours 5 minutes.

EY's J is so good it is totally not worth upgrading to F imo. They hard product is on par with other airlines first class.
Paying $1000 for 12 hours flight for Johnny Blue and a two airplane meals is such a waste. To each his own though...

I agree that definitely has a ton of room, I opted for row 52 which was a bulkhead as well (where the baby cribs go if needed) and the two seats next to me were open still so plenty of room to stretch out. The only thing I didn't like was that the seat really hurt my back and the food choices seemed to run out so I didn't really get to eat. I did opt to upgrade for $1,150 from AUH-JFK ...will see what happens.

Etihad & Alitalia booking - eligible for plusgrade?
I have just made a booking in Y for AUH-FCO-NAP-FCO-AUH on etihad.com. The long haul sectors from/to Abu Dhabi are on EY metal while the short hops to/from Naples are on AZ metal.
Does anyone have experience of receiving the option to bid for an upgrade if it is a mixed carrier booking? I am actually only interested in upgrading the first (overnight) sector from Abu Dhabi to Rome. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thankfully, I tried the link further up this thread when I got home and found I CAN upgrade the EY-operated sectors (hurrah) but NOT the AZ sectors (didn't want to anyway). Thanks.
