If everyone took more carry on luggage than allowed, where would it go. Last year I was sitting at the front of the plane in the bulkhead seat, so one of the last to get on, the overhead lockers were full and my bag had to be put in a locker near the rear meaning I had to wait for for all passengers to get off before I could get it. Have you ever tried moving along the aisle once a plane has landed.
I've no problem with elite getting extra weight but put it in the hold.

Basically rollers of size up to 45 inches linear measured in total (22 x 15 x 8 inches) under 7 kg is permitted, one such bag per pax in econ class, 2 pcs for biz and first class. I was told by HK Emirates sales office that in addition, one computer bag with computer and/or ladies handbag of reasonable size can also be brought on board. My question was, if computer bag contained not a computer but other personal items, would that be OK? Could not get an answer to that question.

For female pax, I suppose they would be permitted one carry on bag plus one computer bag plus one handbag, but who knows?
Carry-on's, laptops, hand bags...
This is too much.. personal items? What's next? ...golf clubs?

I guess the message didn't get through... I said 1-2kg+, that's reasonable...
That's why we're here, FF should have some benefits, even when flying in Y.
I'm talking about a sensible thing, not twice as much as you're allowed.
I for one, didn't take overweight with me for a long time...
It's a matter of principle here....

My second paragraph was not aimed at any individual.

I agree in principle - a larger allowance for FF would be ideal - but we do read on here of some routes with 100+ Golds on one flight. Very difficult to know where to draw the line and still make it manageable.

All this discussion about extra allowances for FF's or elites is well and good, but has anyone any real experience flying out of HKG, econ class, able to bring on as cabin baggage, say one legit carry on bag, under 7 kg, plus one computer bag (whether holding computer or other personal effects) also under 7 kg, or were they forced by check in staff to check one of the bags? Am I going to be the one to test this situation when I take my trip in late August?

Thanks.

My experience from HKG is that they weigh your total hand luggage. So, if you have two pieces, roll on and computer bag, both get weighed and the combined weight should be under seven kilos. This also happens at the other airports I listed in my previous response above.

UAworldwide, thanks for info on your experience at HKG. At least, now that I know what the actual practice is, I can prepare for it. Of my packing for the upcoming trip to a cruise, I will have an Antler convertible roller/backpack and an Antler computer bag. Packed with my stuff, combined weight is 9.5 kg but if I wear the suit jacket/pants (heavy wool), I'm down to 8 kgs. So if I slip the heavier electric items, like shaver, camera, phone, etc into the jacket pockets, I should be down to just over 7 kgs. Once I'm past check in/security, I go and change out of the suit and repack the other stuff.

Thanks.

At Manila last night there was a dragon patrolling the checkin queues and verifying size and weight of carry-on luggage. I was at 5.5kg so no problems but people were being allowed through with anything up to 10kg without a fuss.

At HKG airport, Emirates check in, no problem for carry on bag up to about 10 kgs, plus a smaller personal bag which was not weighed.

Completed 4 flights with EK recently and never checked my cabin baggage but I was flying F/J so that might have been the reason.

No true they don't weigh hand luggage MAN

I flew out MAN-DXB-KUL for a 5 day business trip and my hand luggage weighed in at 9kg so I had to off load stuff to get it down. Even when I said that a lot of it was irreplaceable (student exam scripts that I had to mark so genuinely irreplaceable) the desk clerk was unmoving. I ended up having to put stuff I needed on the flight in the hold because I couldn't risk checking my laptop in)

I got my own back (in my head at least) by buying four very heavy magazines airside.

Was not very happy to see lots of people on flight with large carry on bags plus laptops plus handbags when I had put everything into one bag and suffered for it.

Next time wear a Barbour jacket with "poachers pockets" and load them up with heavy stuff from your bag and then take the stuff out of the pockets and put it back in your bag when you have run the check in gauntlet. You can also stick stuff in the waistband of your trousers, round your neck with string under your shirt and anywhere else you can think of. I am only half joking here ...

Welcome to FT!

You're allowed a laptop bag in addition to your one 7 kg carry on. But even otherwise, there's no need to let check in staff see how much you're carrying on. Sometimes they ask to see it and weigh it if it looks heavy, but if you pretend it belongs to a fellow pax then you can get away with a slightly overweight bag.

You are also committing a criminal act in the UK by making a false declaration regarding luggage. Do NOT try this.

My (slightly more legal ) strategy is to leave my carry-on bag with a (trustworthy ) friend/family member who is dropping me to the airport and ask him to wait with the bag far away from check-in. If the agent doesn't see the bag, they probably won't ask about it/weigh it.
