I got my own back (in my head at least) by buying four very heavy magazines airside.
Was not very happy to see lots of people on flight with large carry on bags plus laptops plus handbags when I had put everything into one bag and suffered for it.

You're allowed a laptop bag in addition to your one 7 kg carry on. But even otherwise, there's no need to let check in staff see how much you're carrying on. Sometimes they ask to see it and weigh it if it looks heavy, but if you pretend it belongs to a fellow pax then you can get away with a slightly overweight bag.
