UAworldwide, thanks for info on your experience at HKG. At least, now that I know what the actual practice is, I can prepare for it. Of my packing for the upcoming trip to a cruise, I will have an Antler convertible roller/backpack and an Antler computer bag. Packed with my stuff, combined weight is 9.5 kg but if I wear the suit jacket/pants (heavy wool), I'm down to 8 kgs. So if I slip the heavier electric items, like shaver, camera, phone, etc into the jacket pockets, I should be down to just over 7 kgs. Once I'm past check in/security, I go and change out of the suit and repack the other stuff.

Thanks.
