From the Israeli legal perspective, is this treated simply as a regular delay of over 8 hours? What does the law require here in terms of compensation?

You know the airline will try to weasel out of it, but they should have to pay if it exceeds the time limit - even for a maintenance issue.

I'm sure they'd argue the tire ripping is an unforeseen issue that's "not standard."

What about the cost of the fuel they dumped? Still makes no sense. I remember continuing on 3 engines for trans pacific flight many many years ago rather than returning.

Mind you that a while ago LY flew back to TLV a 747 bound to NY that was at the time over Ireland.

For anyone interested in reading the safety report on this incident (in Hebrew):

LY611 TLV-DME seems to be returning to TLV

This is from now. Flight departed 6:09 and was supposed to land 10:05. It seems to be in a landing pattern for TLV now (7:05).

The IAA web site now shows flight LY611A, arriving from Ben Gurion, as landing at 7:30, not final. No other flight is planned to land before 8:00.

LY007 returned to TLV

LY007 returned to TLV because of a suspected bird strike. Departed again at 14:43. Aircraft changed from 4X-ELA To 4X-ELE.

I feel like they should have made flight 007 to London instead of to NY.

LY 363 returned to TLV

LY 363 TLV to VIE after 90 minutes made a U turn and returned to TLV. Before take-off the pilot claimed there was a small problem that was fixed.
After more than a hour on the ground they boarded another 737 and took off again more than 4 hours late.

Very strange flight pattern; she circled the airport for almost 20 minutes then hold over the sea, probably to dump fuel. I guess it had to do something with the landing gear.
