Ok, who would have thought Las Vegas would be the next US destination for direct flights ?

El Al will add a once a week nonstop flight to Las Vegas starting in June 2019, thanks in part to a 250K Euro grant from the tourism ministry for starting flights to new destinations.
On the one hand, I was perplexed when I saw this, thinking - after missing so many opportunities to be first in the far east (Vietnam, China, Korea) and so many in the USA (IAD, SFO) why on earth would they choose LAS instead of say, ORD, but then thought maybe this is really "outside the box" thinking, Ultimately I suppose they are doing it this way because their west coast based security personnel can travel easily to LAS from LAX or SFO to cover those flights, assuming they are scheduled on days when there aren't LAX/SFO flights.

I figure there are two reasons for this:

1) There are lots of tech conferences in Vegas and currently all the Israel participants need to transit elsewhere.
2) Sheldon Adelson’s family/empire may be committing to keep the business cabin filled. He travels with his personal plane but perhaps others in the business/family may prefer a direct flight.

I don't think either of these can sustain a route from TLV to LAS

I don't think anyone has too much trouble connecting in NY,LAX or SFO for LAS. And the flight schedule requires at least one way with a connection since few biz travelers are going to be there for a week, on the exact timing of that flight.

No, but it's a hell of a schlep. I've often hit Vegas 22-24 hours after leaving home which is exhausting, so I can certainly see the attraction.

For some reasons people like to take advantage of their holiday time to the limit....even if they check out at 1pm...

Overall good for TLV-Transatlantic pricing because of the competition but frankly less exciting to me than the new route from TAP since there's already a lot of service to London.

Surely because you happen to check some pretty full flights? I just checked TLV-LHR-TLV out January 14th returning 16th, and it's $603 on BA and $650 on El Al.
If I wanted to go out Biz returning in Y, it would be $1550 on El Al or $987 on BA...

With the lack of slots at LHR I wonder if these flights will be from Gatwick instead.

It's also entirely possible that they may choose to cancel an existing route which has a loss.

Same dates it's $204 on Wizz and $251 on easyJet. Almost 3x the LCCs
