Korbel brandy is typically used. Find it on the bottom shelf of your nearest liquor store...but it makes a very good Old Fashioned. Possibly my first cocktail. When you order, specify "sweet" (splash of Sprite), "sour" (sour mix) or "press" (club soda). I don't know anyone who drinks them sour. The classic cherry is still the most prevalent garnish, but olives or cocktail onions are also on offer at supper clubs and some bars. I've been to a couple WI weddings where the bar was only serving beer, wine, and OF's. I'd bet a dollar that the top 2 cocktails in the state are the OF and Bloody Mary (with a free beer back of course).

Ultimately its unlike an Old Fashioned you'll get anywhere else and probably deserves its own name. But I still love them, and I think I was in my 40's before I really appreciated a classic bourbon/rye OF.

Most northwoods barkeeps don't blink an eye but a few size me up as if thinking "that's a new one" or "how hammered is this guy?"

Forgot about the mushrooms! And some bars have a few other options too.
And yep, I now know one person who gets it sour.

The further north you go in the state, the less normal everything becomes. I've even gone to bars in southern WI where you need to specify that you want brandy. And at least up until a few years ago, I don't believe I saw garnishes like onions or mushrooms south of Fond du Lac.

Also, back in the day, I recall going to a place where there was a big picture window behind the bar -- at night they would hang something (bread?) on a clothesline and turn on a spotlight and you could watch the deer come to eat while you sat at the bar 10 feet away.

My take on the John Daly...

18oz. highball glass
Two large, round craft ice cubes
2-4 oz. vodka
10-12 oz. Arizona Arnold Palmer (we use the Lite to save on calories, but the Diet version tastes too artificial)
1-2 oz. mango nectar
Garnish with mint

Adjust all to taste if necessary

Tried my first Last Word ( harr harr 😜 ) — my word, what a great cocktail! Wish I knew this existed sooner.

Smoky whiskey sour

A nice refreshing Gin & Tonic made with Citadelle Gin and Fever Tree Cucumber Tonic Water and of course a generous slice of lime. Really hit the spot being so hot and sticky after polo practice. It was literally the first thing I did when I got home even before taking off my boots.

My cocktail was an Old Fashioned on UA made from the Hail M Travel Kit and a glass with 2 minis of Buffalo Trace, since they hadn't catered the pre-made ones.

Is that Kirkland any good (although not sure if I have seen it in my rare visits to a Costco Liquor store in KY). As for myself tonight Basil Hayden 10 yr on the rocks with my small slice of black forest cake.
