Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery

Michelin Guide just debuted in Malaysia, and we had lunch at Auntie Gaik Lean's in Penang. Delicious Peranakan/Nyonya food and this might be the cheapest sit-down Michelin starred restaurant in the world? Our tab was 155 MYR or about USD 36.

Just had a fantastic meal (95+) at Mosu in Seoul, a true 3 star restaurant. Fantastic interpretations of Korean culture and cuisine. A real treat.
Today, a wonderful 2* meal (93) at Soigne, also in Seoul. Really excellent technique and interesting Korean dishes mixed with French-inspired ones.
The meal at the 1* Bicena (88) was a little less impressive, but made up for in part by the views from the 81st floor and the private room we had.
Oh, and the food we had at Baekyangsa temple with the Geong Kwan (the famous monk/chef) was truly inspiring too.

I have never eaten at a Michelin restaurant and never will but that food is exquisite. Absolutely stunning photos from everyone even if I wouldn't eat half that stuff.

We tried the takeout boxes that Shin Sushi was doing during the pandemic, and they were quite good. Still haven't gone for the full experience--maybe this is the reminder to do so.

This was my third time seating at the sushi bar at Shin. We've ordered the takeout boxes twice during the pandemic closure and ate at a table right after he reopened indoor dining after the pandemic closure ended and before he resumed serving exclusively at the bar. This was probably my least favorite meal there; the chef is just as entertaining and the fish is as good as ever; however, I didn't care for the three seared nigiri courses, two of them were seared with charcoal. I thought that the charcoal smoke overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the fish, especially the otoro. As I posted on Facebook, I liked my recent full note omakase at Michelin listed, but unstarred Sushi Note in Sherman Oaks better. As a plus, Sushi Note, which is owned by the same people who own Augustine Wine Bar, offers wine pairings.

Likely the fire at Augustine the other night made a very large dent in their wine inventory. Per Eater LA, anything not in a wine reefer is likely lost.
