After a large and extremely satisfying lunch (and first time in a restaurant in months -- this one had an outdoor deck so it felt safer) of shrimp po' boy and green salad, dinner tonight was a chocolate malt made with mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Huh? It’s hard to notice the difference between a 1” and a 2” thick steak? I’d say you are sorely mistaken, Señor.
i didn't have time to respond with a huh,what,huh?? |
My guest picked up dessert at a great restaurant ...some kind of dense fudgey chocolate cake with raspberries and mousse and mini chips coating the side. I remembered a photo after i dove in...didn't even bother to put on a plate.

I marinated chicken breasts in bbq sauce for a couple hours, then grilled them. I also grilled some asparagus with olive oil, sel de provence (salt with herbes du provence that I bought at the farmer's market in Nimes last year), and pepper.
Simple and delish. Oh, and some gruner veltliner and a Dove bar (dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream) for dessert. |
Salad with lettuce, tomatoes and watermelon (sorry, no picture), mahi-mahi with lemon-caper sauce, Lodge Bread olive bread, roasted carrots with thyme and oregano (NY Times), and Ottolenghi's baked mint rice with pomegranate and olive salsa (from Simple).

olive oil in a pot with onion and garlic add jalapeno chicken sausage that was in the freezer, sliced up add sofrito base that we happened to have in the fridge, also some adobo and pepper add rice and beef stock (since it was the stock with the nearest expiration date) cook, covered until the stock was absorbed add a can of tomatoes and a can of kidney beans, both drained and rinsed give a stir and done. |
Last night - Steak Frites at Mon Ami Gabi after a shopping trip. As we were considering martinis, we stumbled upon 1/2 price wine bottle night, so also a bottle of Beaujolais.
Tonight - egg roll in a bowl. Basically everything that goes into an eggroll, minus the wrapper, and cooked together in the wok. You can Google the base recipe if interested. We add a healthy scoop of sambal olek and a little hoisin to it usually. |

Tonight we're doing Charlie Bird's Farro Salad with pan roasted King Salmon delivered from Sitka Salmonshares yesterday. The salad recipe is a fav, and everyone who tries it loves it. It's a very flavorful farro in a lemon-parmesan dressing with cherry tomatoes, radishes, pistachios, arugula, basil and mint. (My basil and mint have turned into bushes, so a recipe that calls for a couple cups of herbs makes me happy.) You can find the recipe in the NYTs or in the cookbook Ina Garten released a couple years ago. Versions of it appear elsewhere online, but take my recommendation and use basil-mint-arugula. Some recipes suggest parsley. :(

roasted honey/butter carrots baked potatoes (assd toppings) raw radish / celery / cucumber I forgot about the roasted beets so just put them in the fridge. Oops. |
salad with lettuce, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, mozzarella balls, tomatoes---basil, olive oil, lemon juice and red wine vinegar dressing.

Grilled shrimp over a cold salad made with Trader Joe's Harvest Grains. I didn't take a close look at the veggies and dressing my wife used in the salad, but just taste tested and it's delicious. The shrimp will be my contribution this evening. :)

Pork chops and mushrooms cooked in the cast iron, with creamed spinach on the side.

I'm sure the cinnamon rolls were delicious, but I don't think I could eat something that sweet for dinner. Sub an omelette for the rolls, and you would have had my kind of breakfast for dinner :).

Caesar salad (New Best recipe with anchovies, grated Parmesan, etc)
detroit-style pizzas: cheese & sauce white - cheese with cherry tomatoes, black olives, & feta so yummy I’m not even using a separate salad plate. |
A Lebanese delight of grilled lamb and aubergine with spinach to go with a Lebanese wine tasting. I could just imagine myself in Beirut in happier days!

Last night, all we could muster was a salad with lots of vegetables. We were still pretty full from our lunch time cheeseburgers from Charlie Beinlich's (my craving for the last few days), for those of you that know the north-of-Chicago area. Tonight: Chicken Tikka, rice, and naan. Wanted to give the Mr. Kook's sauce brand a second try and see if I still like it as much. Tomorrow night it's hot dogs and s'mores, as we're backyard camping with our young nephews (assuming the hurricane remnants don't flood the yard tonight). |
dinner tonight will be BBQ Pork in the crock pot. I was going to slow roast it in the oven, but it's too hot for that.
