Brick and Barrel to celebrate my father in laws 92nd birthday. I drank a New England style IPA that was surprisingly bitter. Ordered the bbq burger medium and got it well done. A pitiful side of maybe 10 fries. None of it photo-worthy The appetizer of firecracker shrimp was good though. Came home and he opened his Christmas tawny port and I crawled to bed. Woke up too hot an hour ago. Blah. Why do old people keep their house so warm?

I whipped up a crockpot full of Swiss steak this morning. Right now the house smells incredible. I’m at my father in law’s and too lazy to walk home for my cookbooks so I used a recipe off the internet. It includes brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. I went with it because it didn’t call for anything I couldn’t find already in the house. I also tossed in a couple cut up garden fresh tomatoes as we still have them in abundance (like 40-50 of them).

And, yes kipper, there will be mashed potatoes. And green beans.

We will need to make additional mashed potatoes and will replace the green beans with asparagus tomorrow night but there’s a lot of Swiss steak left. C’mon down.

Kind invitation by a precious friend

Gorgeous suckling pig and other sumptuous dishes not shown .
Enjoying the company & conversation , only 5 of us due to current restrictions ( definitely appreciating while we are still able to dine in restaurants ) .

Sweets to start , forgot significance of each besides to sweeten the new year

Yusheng - with hamachi & fried fish skin ..

To end - Nian gao ( in Mandarin ) and ma tai ko ( in Cantonese , water chestnuts ) With the chef ‘ s compliments

Sun neen fai lok! Had hoped to be HK this CNY, but had to settle for the Bellagio in Vegas. At least, they currently have a Lunar new year’s theme with those grand golden lions for luck.

As an aside - we went through my father in laws cabinets today and threw out anything that had a use by date earlier than mid 2019. His wife died 3 years ago and he didn’t buy or use any of this stuff. I employed out of date flour and brown sugar in the Swiss steak and don’t think anyone was harmed. But who knows the next time any of this will be used. I was sad to throw out 4 year old barley as I cannot find it on store shelves currently and wanted to make beef barley soup.

There's some of the ingredients listed on the wikipedia page, but some ingredients are missing as well (notably jiacama (bangwang) and seaweed salad but there are others as well)
