2x IPA also generally means an ABV of 8% or higher as well.

Generally higher in ABV, yes. Seen one or two under 8% but most are in the 8% range - the most hyped and one of the best Russian River Pliny the Elder is dead on at 8%. Triple IPAs head even higher to 10-13%.

Plenty of hops, often more than 2 in Double IPAs, the originally mentioned one has at least Columbus, Simcoe and Centennial hops. Hops are often dividing into bittering and finishing (finishing give the hoppy aroma character to an IPA, bittering the err, bitter)

Yes, Stone calls their Ruination a 2x IPA. It's OK, but many are better (Pliny being the best IMO). 3x IPA seems to be a category recently created. Younger is considered one, as could Avery Maharaja and Port Brewing Hop 15. Not an official category, but many great IPA's fall under the + 10% ABV range. Hopslam and Hoptimum are a few others. Can't wait to get home to San Diego and have some great IPA's! 5 more days and counting.....

Another good double IPA is Dogfish 90 Minute. They call it Imperial IPA, but essentially the same thing. Reasonably easy to find in the north east US in good grocery stores and beer shops.

Pure Blonde, couldn't pass up the special for what is a prime choice for a low-carb beer.

WildPlumYonder Mar 28, 2012 6:51 pm

Southern Oregon Brewing Maibock, eye-rollingly called "Holy Water" which is quite good, silly name or no.
