My neighbor is headed to southern Maine next week. I’m headed to Asheville for the month of August. I’d like to suggest that he bring back some beer and we have a tasting session. I know what I’ll be looking for - which is to say I know which breweries I’ll be visiting. What should I ask him to fill his suitcase with - it’s been too long since I’ve drunk local beer in Portland?

Bunker, Austin Street, Lone Pine, Rising Tide, Bissell Brothers, and Definitive come to mind for me.

Still one of my favorites even after AB bought them.

Maybe the giant beer conglomerates have learned a thing or two by now. Some of my favorite breweries have been taken over and I don’t sense that they’ve ruined the brand or the product: Funky Buddha and Wicked Weed come to mind. They may be stifling creativity, but that’s what the little guys are for.

kipper's list is pretty good. If you like Belgian style then have your friend bring back some Allagash too.

Someone may have influenced that list. :D

Maine Beer Company as well if they've got Dinner or Second Dinner bottles and/or if you are interested in the current iteration of their Black Barn Series (the current one is a DIPA). Those three are almost always exclusive to the tasting room so if you want a bottle, having someone get one in person is your best bet.
