Actually I paid $6 for 0.3L of Hefe Weizen Dunkel and $14 for a six beer flight (I don't know the size but they were very small glasses) at the Hofbrauhaus last night and felt privileged to do so. But of course it's all about the atmosphere. I was seated in a comfortable chair on a shaded sidewalk one block from the beach at Pier Park as I ogled the scantily clad female vacationers walking by. A smoky brat on a pretzel bun didn't hurt either. There's a biergarten around back but it lacks the view and perhaps back there $6 is too much for 0.3L of beer. Inside, the benches are a little too hard and you have to listen to Beatrice playing the accordion so only in the dead of winter or a rainy day is it worth the $6.

Thanks for buying it. Part of the proceeds go to a small town (Pataskala, Ohio) east of where I live.

^^ Pat-ASK-ala? Pata-SKALA? Pa-TASK-a-la? While those in the know favor the third pronunciation, no matter how you say it, this is a unique red IPA. The beer was first brewed in September 2015 to support music and arts education programs in Pataskala, Ohio, where Stone co-founder Greg Koch grew up. People there loved it, so we added the beer to our seasonal lineup. The deep crimson hue is courtesy of a fairly new special German malt variety by BESTMALZ called Red X. Dry-hopped with Mosaic, Cascade and Amarillo hops, this beer is incredibly citrus-forward, rounded out with biscuit and toffee notes. We think you’ll find this red IPA to be quite deliciously satisfying, no matter how you choose to pronounce it. |

I would describe it as coffee-forward. Not sure if it's the coffee or the hops but it's dry and bitter like an IPA but still a stout, malty and heavy. The oatmeal is not noticeable in any way. I am enjoying it and looking forward to the next one. I'll be back in 'Bama for a family reunion in July and will be looking for more of this.
