My (LoganFlyer's) guide to maximizing your bump chances on Delta:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30484249-post1713.html

(The concise version:

1. Use the App to see if more people are looking for seats than there are seats available. As part of the Customer Commitment, gate agents, phone res agents, and tickets agents must tell you if a flight is overbooked if you ask. (They don't need to say by how many seats.)
2. Do everything you can to get on the volunteer list through OLCI or a kiosk at the airport, since some GAs use that list.
3. Talk to the GA as soon as the gate opens up--don't wait for them to make an announcement.
4. Don't be afraid to negotiate with the GA.)

$500 Mdw-msp

Flight was oversold by 1 and everyone showed up. They couldn’t get me out tonight but I was able to grab a direct flight on southwest instead so it worked out fine and the tickets were the same cost.

Just curious if you gave up an upgrade as a Diamond? Still worth the $500, but worth factoring in.

They were soliciting volunteers at kiosk baggage check about 3 hours before flight on the 359 (a treat!) on ATL-DTW early afternoon Saturday but cleared a big bunch of standbys and still left with three open seats, if I read the monitor correctly.

Quick question

Let’s say GA was looking for 4 volunteers starting at $400 and I was the first and only one to volunteer. Eventually comp goes up to $800 for 3 additional volunteers. In this case do I also get $800 even though I first volunteered at $400?

We've had limited reports of some people have to ask/verbalize this request prior to receiving their voucher.

I believe years ago there was even a case where a person had to escalate to a Red Coat to get their offer matched to the highest.

Obviously it is very rare - but my point is - please don't be complacent about it. Be polite but make sure you pay attention if you'd like to maximize what you get out of it.

I did give up the upgrade but ended up with a direct and with the storm approaching it was probably a safer bet to get to my destination.

Did you ask them to rebook you in First?

And to be honest, giving up first class on MDW-MSP would require about an extra $15 of compensation to entice me, if that.

Generally, yes, but it's always best to tell the agent that you want the largest amount anyone gets.
