CVG downsizing

Delta is slowly adding flights back to CVG. I think different airlines are using concourse B (Breeze/AA), which makes sense since a lot of those gates aren't getting utilized by DL as much, especially since the de-hubbing. Personally, I'd like it if UA would start flying out of B and A would just be for low cost/charter airlines.
The CVG-CDG flight is now a 767-400, from a -300. CVG-MSP will see at least one mainline 717 daily starting soon. One CVG-DTW frequency will be upgraded to a A320. CVG-LAS/LAX will start seeing A321's instead of 739's.

Technically, it's mostly upguages on equipment and not so much adding flights back. It seems pretty clear most of the DL routes that used to operate exclusively with CRJ-200s pre-Covid will not be returning. While they have upped frequencies to 8x daily on CVG-ATL (8th flight is added June 8th for SuMoThFr) from 6x last year, CVG-DTW and CVG-MSP have lost a frequency from 5x to 4x daily compared to 2021 as they moved up from smaller regional jets to larger ones and mainline flights.

Yeah living in Dayton its been tough to see how they have "de flowered" DAY. I am now 95% out of CVG. Its only about a 60 min drive early in the am, but still. For some reason I never even think of CMH. Creature of habit to CVG. Plus it has a skyclub and I am a travel snob

C'mon, it's Flyertalk, use direct and non-stop correctly.

Agree. DAY was never a huge outpost, but it served its purpose with service to MSP. DTW and ATL. If i had to go to a city that I had to connect anyway(Green Bay, Little Rock, OK City) it was nice to have a few options other than just the current ATL. The DAY-LGA service is nice but I can not make the times work with my schedules in NYC. Leaves DAY too late to be productive in NCY and leaves LGA too early to be productive as well.

Because we're the "Birthplace of Aviation"
But to answer your question, one big factor is that the largest employer in the state of Ohio, Wright-Patterson AFB, is in the Dayton metro area and that employer generates a lot of travel in both directions (people at WPAFB traveling to other locations and people in other locations coming to WPAFB for business) by nature of the primary mission here at WPAFB.

Are you sure about the claim that Wright-Pat is the largest employer in the state? My cursory examination says that the Cleveland Clinic, Kroger, Wal-Mart, Amazon, three hospital systems in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus and OSU all employ more people. But ninth isn't bad. I don't have anything against Dayton (in fact, I enjoyed two nights of basketball there recently) but the metro area is down in population over the last two decades.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is considered the largest employer at a single location in the state, with 32,514 employees at the Dayton air force base

I remember it being said about WPAFB being the largest employer in the state both times Ive inprocessed here but perhaps this is what they were trying to convey.

BTW, I lived in Dayton in the early to mid-90s. There was a Delta city ticketing store in downtown Dayton. There used to be quite a few large companies in the area. NCR, Delphi WPAFB, Standard Register, etc. When I was flying out of DAY, we used to get a ton of CVG flyers driving up when CVG was a major hub an ticket prices at CVG were some of the most expensive in the country

Flew out of DAY a couple years ago to save money vs. DTW. I find the history of the airport pretty fascinating. The fact that it had both a TWA Ambassador's club and a Piedmont Presidential Suite (which became a USAir lounge) at one point is pretty mind-blowing -- https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1431093
I was thinking the current "business center" lounge might be in one of those old lounge locations. But it looks like they were in different parts of the airport.

Just a word of warning for those flying out of CVG -- the parking lot garage has been downsized due to all of the ongoing maintenance. Arrived earlier this week to find that the garage was full and blocked off by a truck. No notice on any signs leading to the airport. Since I usually only arrive about 45 minutes before my flight, I had the choice of parking in the economy lots and potentially missing my flight or paying extra to valet. Not a good look for CVG. DAY is so much easier.

Hope the re painting is done soon. They may also be putting sensors in the ground on each spot show if its open or occupied. Ive noticed little discs in each spot.

That CVG short-term parking has always been amazing. it is always near capacity, regardless of season, day of the week, Delta hub status....whatever....it's busy.
