I put credit for the success or failure for a lot of service recovery on local management. They're normally the ones who encourage or discourage a culture of putting the customer first. Some airport managers hate meal vouchers... some managers hate using the snack carts. Luckily, my managers are often the ones out in the gate area offering the snacks and pouring drinks.

While there are definitely exceptions (including among the DYKWIA and other self-important crowd), I find most people are reasonable as long as they are treated with courtesy and respect (and that includes communicating frequently, even if there is no update). It's when front-line service people don't treat people with courtesy and respect that things go downhill. Fast.

This was more outrage because of the state of that airline. I doubt if that had been the only issue the airline had, that we would have heard. Also there happened to be a MP on the flight. Again, another reason for the "outrage" that the minister had.

Nothing ever came of it, it's standard procedure when airline systems ate down. Heck they even have paper luggage tags that are ready to be filled out at most stations. I have one from just before NW folded their operations under the DL call sign. They're used so infrequently that in 2011 the paper luggage tag still had NW Orient printed on it.

For once I picked a good week to fly AA, ... which often works out poor, very poor for me.

and here I've been grumbling that my flights yesterday got me here 18 hours before I needed to be here (schedule change moved the original flights too late so I had to move it forward). Looks like I dodged a bullet, I just checked the flights I would have been on first one was delayed more than 4 hours and the second was delayed slightly less but would have missed the connection and not gotten in until midnight tonight.

Here's an article from 2012:

This might help you adjust your original numbers some. And I've seen this in practice so yeah it works.

Murphy's law. Parents booked on DL1548 DTW-LGA at 12:01pm. At one point this morning was showing a 3 hour delay. Decided to cut our loses and booked them on AA via DCA. DL1548 ends up only having a 30 minute delay! But they were much less stressed. When the decision had to be made, there were too many unknowns. Oh well. Lost 30k skypesos that weren't of much use anyway.

Why would you lose 30k skypesos? You should be able to get a refund due per the waiver for canceling.

Flight wasn't "cancelled or significantly delayed."

I'd think you have a reasonable shot at getting the miles returned considering the circumstances today, and that you saw a 3hr delay posted earlier.

I remember when PMNW had a meltdown shortly before the merger. I got a hand written luggage tag that day and was in pretty good shape because I had done OLCI and printed my boarding pass. TSA was being bureaucratic that day and wouldn't let people go through security with hand written boarding passes, even though NW's airside terminals seemed to be working so that seat assignments could easily have been done at the gate for everyone.

Plus their change of plans opened up seats for others in the IRROPS scramble. Definitely worth calling/asking.

I was originally going to fly LAX-JFK-LHR today but moved it back a day when I booked -- glad I did.

Except my brother and 84-yo Mother are stuck in GRR trying to get back home to Atlanta. :(

For those traveling tomorrow, are you worried about any issues? I'm on LGA-ORD in the evening and am hoping everything will have sorted out by then.

That will teach to Delta to be more transparent regarding award availability and pricing.

The argument you are making isn't even apples:bananas......it's apples:lightbulbs.

Frightening that an adult mind would even think that way.
