I've landed at runway 13 many times. usually in clear weather with high visibility tho. It's a great view as final approach is over the bay almost like landing on an aircraft carrier.

Aviation expert on ABC says the plane landed with 9 mph tail winds with gusts up to 20 mph. That pilot should have never landed in those conditions!! He should have flat out refused to ATC and come in on runway 31 with a head wind. Slick conditions with longer runway time needed and a higher reverse thrust. NO WAY!

I dont think it's missing - it seems to just be the angle...after all, the pax are stepping out the window exit onto SOMETHING...

Glad no serious injuries.
From some of the video I saw, the right wing has damage along with the nose.

And yeah, gotta love CNN. I'm surprised they didn't post a story about the missing Malaysia flight again too.

Happy everyone is OK. Concerned DL will eventually consider landing on the runway as an enhancement.

Bill Evans is on WABC news 7 now (lead meteriologist for that channel) did a great presentation - winds were at 18 mph from NW directly behind the plane while landing. Bad vectoring by airport. Winter weather rarely provides for winds that call for landing on that runway. What's with the control tower????

Further, a wind check seconds before the accident was 020@10, which is a crosswind with a slight tailwind component for landing on 13.

Looks like the plane was coming in on emergency. Mightn't be that vectoring had nothing to do with it:

DL1685 LGA-MCO, DL1948 MCO-LGA, and DL1350 LGA-RSW are all now cancelled.

Yea -- I thought it was cut off and pax was just stepping on the piece that was left. Hard to tell when there's no engine there.

If it is an emergency that would require longer than normal runway length and this weather you would think they would divert to JFK

::Shrugs:: Wasn't there, don't know, but IF the above was correct, I'm sure JFK was considered.

for those wondering why they would land on RWY13, here is the weather at the time of the landing:

KLGA 051551Z 01008KT 1/4SM R04/2800V3500FT SN FZFG VV009 M03/M05 A3012 RMK AO2 SLP199 P0006 T10331050
RWY31 does not have a precision approach and you couldn't come close to landing in this weather. RWY04 does have an ILS, but the visibility requirements are relatively high at 1sm/RVR5000. RWY13 has an RVR limit of 2400 which makes it the only viable runway for this weather. (and btw, I don't see any 20 kt tailwind)

The emergency and broken wing were AFTER the accident, not on approach. On approach everything was normal.
