I'm on flight 1529 JFK-LAS now...security was empty and we took off pretty much on time. The desk agent at the lounge said they had a few delays yesterday but nothing to significant. Hopefully it's much ado about nothing.

If you want to get where you are going, avoid any Delta Connection flights from or through the North East. DL made it pretty clear on the earnings call that those will be the first to be sacrificed and they will rebook on whatever mainline capacity is available connecting through hubs. Taking Amtrak from NY to DC or BOS would also be prudent as those flights are not mainline and there continue to be multiple cancellations and delays on DCA/LGA & LGA/BOS routes.

Great.
Except that, for example, 4 of 7 daily flights from PHL to DTW are now regional carriers. |

Can't say for sure if 'wind' really is an issue or not however. It is cloudy with 20nt+ winds out of the northeast in the JFK region. Probably enough to increase separation distance, but doubt it should be causing 2hr+ delays to the area.
These are furlough impact, with LAX not stating it but sounds strongly like it for ground control. DFW: Due to OTHER:STAFFING D10, arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delay between 31 minutes and 45 minutes and increasing. LAX: Due to TM Initiatives:ESP:VOL, traffic is experiencing Gate Hold and Taxi delays between 31 minutes and 45 minutes in length and increasing. |
And now the airlines are requesting waiver of the tarmac delay rule:

Yeah thats just what we need... pax stuck on planes for 5 hours because of "FAA staffing" delays. I'm sure airlines would jump all over that.

And, when it comes to Congress, FAA, airlines, and PAX... you know who is at the bottom of the hill facing the flow. |
I flew yesterday SJC-SLC-DCA, leaving SJC around 1330 and leaving SLC around 1700. Other than the inbound CRJ-900 reaching SJC a few minutes late, all operations ran smoothly (the SJC ground staff turned the plane quickly and we arrived in SLC on time; the SLC-DCA leg on a 737-800 got away from the gate a few minutes early, benefitted from a 120+ mph tail wind, and parked at the gate at DCA 20 minutes early). Only blemish on a good trip was that the satellite TV on our 737-800 didn't work at all.

Oh geez, here we go... Staffing ground stop delay for flights heading into IAD, DCA, and DFW now.

So, i'm not understanding the commentary on here regarding this being an "administration hissyfit".
Do you think cutting $647M from a ~$15.2B(down from $16B in FY12) budget would have 0 impact? They have to cut that all out of 5 months of budget, which makes things even worse. I don't get some people. |

And if it's non-ATC employees, please list their names, assignments and the amount to be saved. We could pass your deep insights on to the FAA. |
tomorrow's furloughs
Is there any way to know what tomorrow's furlough locations will be?
Flying MSN-ATL-UIO tomorrow and hoping for the best. |

Suffice it to say, that there are some of us beyond the Belt-way who have well-deserved skepticism when any federal agency asserts that it can't find 4.25% fat in its budget. I've been exposed to the process. I have no doubts that, last August, there were folks in the FAA tasked with finding anything that money could be spent on before the end of the fiscal year under the "If we don't spend it all, our next budget request will be cut!" paradigm. |
