FAQ
  1. What is EMV contactless?

EMV contactless is a form of contactless/NFC that uses the same security and encryption that is used when inserting a chip card into an EMV-enabled terminal. Other than not having to sign/enter a PIN for smaller transactions, the security is effectively the same as chip and PIN/chip and signature.

In contrast, MSD contactless is an older version that is designed just and only for the United States. This effectively uses much the same flow as a swiped card transaction with the same rules.

  2. What is CDCVM?

CDCVM stands for Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method. It's a method of telling the terminal that the customer verified their identity using their mobile device. Terminals that support it will waive the signature/PIN requirement typically in place for larger transactions, potentially saving time at checkout.

    More info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202527

  3. Does EMV contactless need to be supported to support CDCVM?

Typically, yes. (However, there are some exceptions below.)

  4. Why can't I tap my foreign-issued contactless card at most places in the US?

This is likely because the store does not support EMV contactless. Foreign issued contactless cards typically do not support MSD contactless since other markets have had EMV for quite some time. In contrast, most stores in the US have yet to get the necessary certifications/software for EMV contactless so they are typically MSD-only--if contactless is enabled at all. (See below for a list of stores where your card will likely work.)

  5. I paid for a purchase with Apple/Android/Samsung Pay and still had to sign for it.

Most likely, the store in question does not have EMV contactless enabled (see above question). However, there are instances where CDCVM does not work even with EMV contactless enabled. Restaurants that allow tip adjust, for example--where the tip amount is written on a paper receipt and entered by the staff later--cannot support CDCVM. It may simply be a matter of the merchant's processor or the POS software in use not supporting it too.

Another common reason is if you used a US-issued AmEx card with a mobile wallet. AmEx currently does not allow EMV contactless support in mobile wallets for these cards, so they always run as MSD contactless. Because of this, CDCVM is not supported (with very few exceptions, as noted below).

Note: if you used Samsung Pay, you may have paid with MST instead of NFC. Since MST emulates the magnetic pulses that the terminal receives when swiping a regular card, the normal magstripe rules apply.

  6. How can I tell whether EMV contactless was used?

An easy way to tell if you have Apple Pay is to pay with a Visa or MC while in airplane mode. Wallet will then show a transaction amount next to "Payment" for the card that was used. Alternatively, EMV-related information will typically print on the receipt (AID, etc.) if EMV contactless was used.

In my case: Targets in San Jose CA and Raleigh NC this weekend did not support NFC.
And today, I used my iPhone to pay at a Target in Cary NC (the one on Walnut Ave). How about that!

My local Target now shows up on my Google Pay nearby stores list. So basically about a five day lead time from when someone uses it until it shows up--unless of course it was enabled sooner than the 30th.

That said, I'm not sure usage of Google Pay is the only source of data for it. For instance, the Shake Shacks here have shown up for a while but I have yet to see any of the Square stuff they've been using elsewhere.

It seems the new setup will have Square readers connected to their NCR registers for the walk ups.

Right, but I'm not sure any of us has any idea as to ETA. I would have expected it to already be at all the locations based on what the Google Pay app says.

Blaze Pizza installed MX915s since I was last here. Everything is enabled with default NCR software. I'm guessing MSD only since I was asked for tip after tapping (plus lack of EMV info on the receipt).

Today two Apple Pay (german Mastercard) transaction were declined. Chip + PIN worked. first transaction was about $14 at a Boston museum store. Second transaction was $35 at The North Face store. Both merchants use the MX900 series.

Same card works just fine with Apple Pay at Five Guys, Trader Joe‘s and Walgreens eg.

Sounds like those places only support MSD contactless, which is only really provisioned for US cards on mobile wallets AFAIK.

Yep, the only cards I've seen recently that support MSD are a couple of Canadian MasterCards and that's it .

Didn't someone post something like this from Panda Express years ago? That rollout is taking a while!

Also was at a Shell station today and noticed EMV inside. Nice! Hope they update their pumps soon.

I noticed a Panda Express here with everything enabled a while ago but no movement since. My suspicion was that they're only upgrading the high-fraud locations and leaving the others as magstripe-only; we'll see if there's actual movement or if they're still continuing that strategy.

Also, Shell's actually done EMV inside for a while (and contactless a bit more recently). I remember reading something about their timeline for outdoor enablement but I don't recall what dates they were thinking at the moment.

Maybe the "testing" they chose to do was only at high fraud locations. Now that "testing" is complete, we are seeing a more vast rollout, especially with people taking to twitter wanting Apple Pay. I am happy that people are wanting Apple Pay. More people should want Apple Pay.

Actually, I think it is too early to conclude that the testing phase for EMV was a success. They should have delayed the roll out of EMV to the rest of their locations for at least another year or two until they can demonstrate that their payment interfaces are bug free, and that contactless can be processed as EMV rather than MSD.

The Panda Express in Reno on Kietzke Lane that got MX915s late last year has EMV Contactless, Quick Chip, on Verifone Point Software. All interactions with the pinpad work while the employee is entering the order into the register. It also has scrolling Panda marketing messages on the idle screen. It looks pretty "official." This is a high volume location that gets quite a few larger orders.

Yet another Panda opened a month or so after Kietzke got MX915s and is swipe only... so who knows what they are doing.

My local Safeway in the Seattle area now has EMV contactless. The pinpad at the self-checkout had the four dots throughout the entire transaction.
