This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

I have not gotten any email. Just happened to log in to check something and noticed the large reduction of my reward miles balance. I am actually surprised by the number including earning from a pending charge.

Yours is online redemption or a manual redemption thru a CSR who put in a request?

thank you.

I like barclays but it only gives 2points

if i spend $2000 per month that is 48000 point per year +10% when you use

so 52800 points

which i can use it for airbnb $528. is is great to sleep 5 nights near beach in CA

I think it is better than hyatt credit card.

unless you want to sleep and eat breakfast for freea at hotel

but you have to pay $85 annual fee so this comes up $443 free money

Yet, I have not seen the $400 credit shows up in my account.

Does this mean the request on redemption is granted? If so, how long it takes the credit to post?
When does Chinese visa cost $400? What kind of visa is it?

Really?
I used my 2 free Hyatt nights at Sydney Park Hyatt for rooms that start at $800 - and that was when there was no minimum spend required for the 2 nights, only first use. Also, I believe that the AF was waived for the first year (I could be wrong about this, but it hardly matters - the Park Hyatt was well worth it - it beats your $528 by a country mile)

Not a surprise your answer.

I am talking about if you want to keep the card for a long time.

you got a two free night so what? then?

First for good news - $400 credit shows up in account activity screen, despite Reward Redemption History still not shows anything, also no email but the credit is in the account. Wiki is duly updated.

For US citizens, Chinese Tourist Visas have a flat fee of $160 standard processing fee, regardless of validity duration or number of entries. Expedited would have additional fees naturally.

Also ONLY for US citizens, thanks to a reciprocal agreement, we can get a One-Year, Multiple Entries Tourist Visa versus one-entry, two-entries, that normally are issued to other nationalities, PROVIDED you applied WITHIN US. Such reciprocal benefit does NOT extended to US citizens applied their Chinese Visas outside US.

Furthermore, China has 1 Embassy, 6 Consulate offices in US that each one governs a geographic district - you MUST apply your visa from the consulate office that governs your state, IN PERSON if you do not go thru the sanctioned travel agency. To put it in another way, if we happen to be in San Francisco and walk in the Chinese Consulate there to apply the visas, we would be turned away and told to apply at Houston.

So if you do not live in a city or very easily travel to a city where there is a Chinese Consulate, or DC, you most likely would use a sanctioned travel agency for your visa application.

We can go thru a sanctioned travel agency which would in turn submit our applications on our behalf, still IN PERSON but it is the agency's staff, authorized by us, and sanctioned by the Chinese Consulate of Houston.

The Travel Agency fee is $49 per person, plus a FedEx overnight return to send back your passports, that is $26, if you want to have a signature required delivery, add $3 (those are the standard FedEx charges). Paid by CC, 3% convenience fee. So it all adds up to $419.12 for 2 Visas standard process time (6 business days from receipt by the agency to receipt by us). Very professional service by the way.

In the Travel community of FT, you will find a China forum - there are threads talking about the nuts and bolts of Chinese Visa, if interested. I found the most recommended travel agency in that forum. The agency has 7 offices across the country but the customer service and main office happens to be in Houston.

And it is kind of silly to use the retail value for very expensive properties - because let's be honest, who frequent here would normally stay in those places? While for you, a multiple days vacation at a nice beach might be more norm for most people and probably more enjoyable as well.

I would, especially when it is free
OP wants to "use it for airbnb $528. is is great to sleep 5 nights near beach in CA"
I live in SF - don't need to stay near beach in CA. I would trade a Park Hyatt for an airbnb any day.
Between the 2 of us we got 4 free nights and we stayed 3 nights in Sydney (value over $2400) and the fourth free night was in Zurich Park Hyatt (over $800). Annual free night always worth way more than an AF.
Works for us as we travel a lot.
Different strokes for different folks and as always, YMMV

As I said above, the annual free night is worth way more than the AF.
The Platinum status, while not great, is nice with free wifi (+a few other benefits). Lots of nice properties around the world and points required to stay are way less than most hotel chains.
I don't have this card but the WIKI states that if you earn 40K miles (for a $20K spend) you get $400 +10%=$440.
If I spend $20K on my Hyatt card I will have at least 20K Hyatt points but as many as 40K or 60K points - depending on where I spend the money. Even at the lowest return (20K points) gives me a value well over $440
As always, YMMV

Like I said - different strokes for different folks.
You like airbnbs - I like Hyatts. Maybe when you get as old as I am, you may change your mind (or maybe not).
BTW, for 40K or 60K points + your free night you can easily stay for 5 nights (or more).
Enough said - Vive la Difference

Same argument for us regarding to those sought after South Beach redemption. lol.

Personally we do not really care how much those expensive properties retail bookings might cost, knowing fully that 1) we could if we want to, get corporate rates at HUGE discount on the SAME room. 2) we normally dont pay such out of pocket cash. 3) Some of the properties, including the Park Hyatt Vendome, is NOT that nice...

Though the high price tags certainly stroke some egos when using the retail value as yard stick. Fully understandable.

What I REALLY MISS is the golden days when Hyatt at the FFN promotions for several years. We used them in Park Hyatt Sydney, Park Hyatt Tokyo, Grand Hyatt Tokyo (nicer than Park in several ways), plus some other international properties, as well as virtually 90% of the Hyatt resorts in US. The one in Hunting Beach CA and the one in Bonita Spring FL are particularly nice. We even got a suite in Huntington Beach on one stay in Dec. That was a nice touch. But the club at Bonita Spring is one of the nicest in the system, probably only second to the one in Kauai. Those were the much nicer days. Sigh.
