Actually the 64% figure was leaked into the press from a study non peer reviewed. Then the study was published and there are criticism from the peers about the methodology used. So until the study is revised I would take it with a large pinch of salt.

Due to the stratospheric rise in cases in the NL, new restrictions on nightlife were just announced, effective until August 14. Cases have increased seven-fold in a week, and will likely keep reaching for the sky. Sadly, I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg on the next round of EU restrictions. France is due to make an announcement on Monday, that will likely be similar or worse. Those of us with a trip planned in the next month are yet again back in a hellish limbo.

Hopefully, vaccination rates will eventually be high enough for decisions to be made on hospitalizations, rather than asymptomatic infections. Of course, this will only happen if the 15-30 year-olds can be convinced (or coerced) into getting a shot.

Respectfully, 15-year-olds have only been able to start making appointments to get a shot in the Netherlands since Monday! The percentage of fully-vaccinated 15-year-olds in the Netherlands is 0. Likewise, the percentage of fully-vaccinated <30-year-olds is also well under 20%, mostly comprised of people who were in high-risk groups who were able to get vaccinated earlier this year plus a few hundred thousand n of youngsters who went #dansenmetjanssen. Healthy 30-year-olds have only been able to make appointments since June 11, and they're getting Pfizer or Moderna vaccines with the shots spaced ~4 weeks apart - i.e. the first of them will be getting their second shots next week at the earliest, with immunity coming ~2 weeks later.

Basically, this is just the completely foreseeable slow-motion trainwreck of the bungled vaccine rollout in the Netherlands (worst in Western Europe) - a toxic mix of a bad bet on AstraZeneca plus jobsworth bureaucracy leading to a wickedly slow start - meeting incompetent (rushed) reopening policy.

Editorializing a bit more, the one bit of karmic justice here is that the current spike in infections is mostly among young people who aren't going to have their summer holidays abroad cancelled - because they can't actually afford to go abroad (or buy homes, or ever properly retire.) It's the older generations who've stolen their future who mostly stand to have their holidays ruined by the Netherlands going "red" on the EU maps.

I just picked '15' at random, since I do not know the specific age brackets in NL. My point was that the delta surge has been due by a very large margin to unvaccinated people under 40 going out and socializing, for sports/nightlife/etc, regardless of whether it is in India, the UK, or the USA. This age group is also the one that is showing the greatest level of resistance to getting vaccinated, even after it becomes readily available. A fair percentage of my social media time is spent reading posts and comments from people 18-30-ish from the USA and EU+ (mostly related to music/festivals/nightlife), and it is pretty astounding just how overwhelmingly anti-vaccine and anti-COVID this demographic is. For every one comment that is pro-vaccine or pro-mask, there are at least 100 that are very anti-everything. Even at the height of the lockdown, this demographic was all to happy to gather in large numbers and tight corridors, with 0% mask compliance, probably due to a dangerous combination of indestructibility, ignorance, and most significantly, peer pressure.

The vaccine rollout in the Netherlands was slow to start, but has since picked up speed and is currently above average in the EU. Within a month from now ~70% of all Dutch > 12 years old will have been fully vaccinated. There wasn’t a “bad bet on Astra Zeneca”, which is one of the vaccines in the EU’s vaccine procurement effort that is/was used in all EU countries.

The reopening was indeed too rushed, and people took full advantage of the opportunities (including nightclubs not properly checking vaccination/negative test documentation, and people copying QR codes from friends) which is the reason nightlife had to be closed again.

Germany's Robert Koch Institute has again published the source country for infections in Germany:

https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/...ublicationFile

About 20% of cases where the infection source country is known were from abroad, with Spain accounting for 30% of those cases.
