Aw, I suspected that (especially since this was a high-senority int'l route). Until the recent rule change, this guy would have been retired.

Statistically, you're going to get more sudden deaths (like heart attacks) more in 61 to 65 year olds than in younger pilots.

Is there a real risk to safety? I don't think so, but I'm sure this can of worms will now be revisited.

Very sad news. My condolences to the pilot's family and co.

I wonder if the pax know what happened. I would be a little freaked out if I knew the captain of my flight died, but I also know the FO should be able to handle everything.

A non-rev would be listed as a pax, right? I guess that answers the question of whether it was actually a relief pilot or not.

That what I would think. I bet it was a CO employee. Either a non rev or a relief pilot.

Certainly a sad event.

Does this get notified to passengers on board when it happens?

Wall to wall cable news coverage.

It will be particularly lame, as other than the unfortunate death, there's not much to talk about here.

Except the 61-thing, which will no doubt be good for several hours of punditry in the next 2 days.

Wow...so sad. My thoughts are with him and the CO family.

Sad turn of events lately for CO...some they could help, some they couldn't.

I would assume they made an announcement for a doctor or a medical professional onboard, but I doubt they stated they needed assistance because the captain became incapacitated. That would just cause panic among the pax. If they had non-rev pilots on board, the crew knew who they were so they could just go get them discreetly.

I am sure some of the pax figured out what was going on, especially if they had to remove the captain from the cockpit.
