A lot of it comes from the amount that folks are asked to "donate" to maintain their tickets from year to year. If a successful football or basketball program can carry an athletic department (cross country, squash, etc.), then successful programs can help balance the athletic dept. budget.

I am one of those "donors" to keep our USC tickets that we have maintained since the 1970's.

Yes, but I've worked for far too many institutions where such a significant portion of alumni and donor giving is directed to the athletic program that the institution sports gorgeous, state of the art stadiums and sports facilities, while academic buildings are rotting away, and students who live on campus live in accommodations that make the average Section 8 project look luxurious. On the other hand, there are plenty of institutions of higher education out there who don't have major athletic programs, place a higher priority on fundraising efforts to support academic programs, improvements to facilities that impact all students and staff, and merit- and need-based aid programs that make it possible for all students who they accept to be able to afford the cost of attendance. They also don't have coaches that are making more in a month than most of the academic faculty is in a year.

Dinner was fun tonight - me and Mr.Brit, xyzzy and the fabulous Mrs. xyzzy and their delightful daughter, Olton Hall, Steve Gadfly and MissGadfly, Scott6067 and FT Lurker.

We had fun at the Thai restaurant in HP. FTLurker and Steve Gadfly realized that "medium spicy" in the Thai restaurant really means "burn a hole in the roof of your mouth" hot!!!
