LA County wanred folks against firing guns into the air. Every year, some poor person gets whacked due to some idi:rolleyes:t who fires into the air.

I will be on a mattress run jamboree starting tomorrow thru Monday, so I will report back on gunfire in the OC. ^

Though sometimes it's guns . . .

Sorry - Baglady has it. I would be inclined to believe there were fire crackers except:

1. This is the 'hood.
2. There were 6 - 8 *shots* fired (that was it).
3. There are three patrol cars now parked down the block.

Now it could be that they were celebrating early.. with a gun.. but I'm not going to go outside to inquire. :p

She seems happy with that and it's a whole lot stressful for me. We arrived at the Marriott last night in GUM, and the room was so musty I had an asthma attack right away. The bellman even remarked that the room smelled bad. I called down and the front desk clerk said they were sold out but she would get back to me; it would just take a while. Meanwhile, I checked the Westin (sold out), Sheraton (sold out), Hilton (sold out), Hyatt (sold out) and was looking at the Nikko and other assorted properties when I got a call from the manager that they found me another room. I have no clue why they would have given a platinum such a $#!tt^ room to begin with, but the room they ended up giving us was fine, though still not great. The bed was awful (I was only in it for less than two hours so it really doesn't matter), there were various housecleaning issues, etc. but at least it didn't smell.

Not too much you can do in 6 hours and sorry to hear about the hotel room!

A great adventure for BLJ! BTW, I suspect you didn't get a Spam Musubi in HNL.... :D

No kidding. I don't get the enormous amounts of money that are dumped into college sports, and the outrageous salaries the coaches are paid. Seems like there are much higher priorities for that money. The millions some of these coaches are paid would go a lot farther, and have a lot more long-term positive effect in our society, if it the universities were spending it on academic programs and financial aid to help lower the cost of attendance to the students.

Tell me about it. Because of several business trips this year where I had to go back and forth between Manila and Tokyo or Osaka, GUM ended up number five on my most visited airports.

They are excellent.

Yes it is. I'm jealous of those who are there now. I'd love to go back.

I read somewhere that the money that major football programs bring in (regardless of the coaches pay) was enough to keep the colleges funded and aided in the lowering of costs to the students for tuition etc.

Think of TV revenues, ticket gate sales and monies donated to the programs.

A lot of it comes from the amount that folks are asked to "donate" to maintain their tickets from year to year. If a successful football or basketball program can carry an athletic department (cross country, squash, etc.), then successful programs can help balance the athletic dept. budget.

I am one of those "donors" to keep our USC tickets that we have maintained since the 1970's.
