He can exert a lot of influence over Congress and its legislation, if he so chooses. He controls the keys to DNC funding, $ and support in primaries and general elections.
Hey I see a blue hooved pony must be from the blue smurf football field. |

Only an intelligent political discussion could pave the way for me to sneak 2 consecutive posts in for 125k. It sort of shows the level at which I operate.

I too am worried about inflation, what with the hundreds of billions of dollars they essentially pulled out of their a$$es. I'm all for government helping out when there is a demonstrated need, but handing out metric butt-tons of cash to people who already made billions is a very  way to go about it. That cash outlay has to hit the economy at some point, just like the sub-prime mortgages did in 2007 and 2008.
If you're talking ARRA (v1.0, 2.0) yeah, that certainly doesn't help inflation. The goal is, of course, stimulate the economy to get people working to get them to pay taxes and buy things. The theory being that if its successful the strengthened economy pays back the funds. Reference: New Deal. I bought a house. I will receive a $8k tax credit on my 09 taxes. Cost / benefit analysis: did my $8k stimulate more than an $8k transaction? Absolutely. Of course the $7,999 question is would I have purchased the house without the tax credit? Probably, but it was a nice cherry on top to motivate me to make a big investment in a questionable economic period.

That is what grates me so much about Obama (or ANY president for that matter) and saying they will 'save jobs' 'make jobs' etc, they DO NOT however their policy can influence business willingness to invest and hire. I won't say anymore right here other than: there is a lot of uncertainty and businesses don't like that.
Don't discount how much the drivel becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If enough people say the economy is improving, it will improve because at some point you have to throw  to the wind and believe it. The economic "collapse" (for lack of a better word) was exacerbated by all the talk of the collapse of banks, foreclosures, and the rest of the nonsense we were exposed to last year. It being an election year only amplified this. The POTUS has a professional obligation to be a cheerleader to a certain extent. When the POTUS speaks, people listen. Whether or not they like or agree with that he's saying. Suggested reading. |

Hey now, I did not mean to do that, let us move on to talking about ponies, pink ponies, burnt orange ponies, and crimson unicorns.
Moreover, regarding ponies and unicorns, I have two pre-teen daughters and I hear enough about ponies and unicorns, thankyouverymuch. I also have no dog in the aforementioned hunt (more concerned about whether nuts can bonk ducks on the head) but expect that the burnt orange ponies will have more support around here. |

Yes, bully pulpit...as I said but when his objectives are obstructed many times by own party, it is seen as weakness and not a positive.
That's me done for political commentary for the day. |

Good to know. I don't know why I thought otherwise.
My official work in the DC office consisted of moving a switch from being plugged in directly to the wall to a UPS. Took me 30 seconds, and that included rooting around to find the key to the closet. I'm going to an aviation industry luncheon as "press" and then to the House Homeland Security hearing this afternoon, with my travel costs covered. :D :D

To some extent the president has a bully pulpit, but if there is over a long period no progress in congress it is a negative driver to business, not a positive. Even more of a negative driver is if the bully pulpit is being used for something seen as harmful to business.
