OT, let's say you were in a country that you didn't think had the best medical care and you were having what some would consider a medical crisis - would you go their hospital? Wait it out? WebMD? Box thoughts?

What we do in Florida is to get on the first nonstop to New York.

Depends on how bad the medical crisis is and where I am. If you can get into a private hospital in many places - even those with less than stellar systems - you'll be handled as well as you would at St. Vincent's in NYC, and for quite a bit less coin. Fortunately it hasn't happened to me yet, so I don't have any real firsthand experience.

Is there such things as off topic?

There are so many variables at play here, it's impossible to provide an accurate comment. But, I love being inaccurate, so I'll venture a response. ;)

It depends. It depends on what I thought was wrong with me, what the chance of morbidity was. And where I was.

With few exceptions I'd go to the best hospital I could find (after contacting the local US consulate and letting them know I was up a poop's creek) to get stabilized. Have them run tests and figure out what was wrong with me, if that's available. Then, consult with a doctor state-side, weigh my options in a rapid transport to someplace else, have a local procedure, or just load myself up on pain killers and go gently into that good night.

I'd also look into how on earth I could use the services of an air ambulance. Maybe my booking credit card has a provision for that, or my insurance, etc.

Cleary no one at WSJ.com knows much about Continental:

Continental, whose hub is at Houston’s Hobby International, is also permitting travelers to the affected areas to reschedule. A travel advisory posted on the carrier’s Web site advises that “travelers with itineraries to, from or through the Houston hub from Friday through Saturday should consider accelerating, postponing or rerouting their trip to avoid possible inconvenience caused by an interruption to flight schedules.”

It has since been updated - only after someone from Texas flamed them :) LOL. They also started the article by talking about Southwest - I guess that is the biggest airline in TX.

Makes me think of the movie Babel - not a pleasant experience. I think, if possible, as belynch said, consult with a doctor stateside.

Interestingly, when I went to Mumbai and stayed at the Grand Hyatt there - one of the amenities on the hotel website was video consults with the Cleveland Clinic for medical issues. As I worked there for 10 years - that made me feel much better about traveling to India.

Oh come on, Babel wasn't that bad. :o

But it's an interesting scenario. Let's say you're shot in a remote area of Morocco - what do you do?

I'd say it would be what you'd do if you were shot on the street in NYC, but on a protracted time-scale.
  • Assign someone to go get emergency response, however possible.
  • Assign someone to control your immediate life-threats (in this case, ABC --> circulation - so, control the bleeding).
  • Treat for shock.
  • Determine if you can be extricated before you succumb to your injuries -- uhm -- if no, dull your pain.
  • But, for something like a GSW, getting to any medical facility is better than going nowhere. If nothing else, oxygen is oxygen and can keep your cardiac function going a bit longer.

I'd also ask some of the expatriates (if there are any around) for recommendations. If it's a definite crisis, I wouldn't wait it out.

I needed medical care in Beijing when visiting the folks during their expatriate assignment and from word of mouth they found a hospital with great English-speaking, Western-trained physicians. It was definitely more expensive than the typical local clinic, but way cheaper than medical care in the US.

ETA: baglady, I hope you are feeling better and not having another heart attack!

I hope everything is ok - Like everyone said it may depend on the severity of the issue , or if you have a choice to wait or not.

On my Surf trip to the Maldives , I stepped on a Sea Urchin when i jumped off my board in shallow waters. After removing the spines , I still had some in my foot and they told me I should see the doctor so he can cut them out.
I went to a local island to see him , and he said it was fine and gave me some Maldivian Benadryl to prevent allergic reaction.
The nurse initially tried to give me an injection , which I had to go to the pharmacy and buy for a dollar . I later went back to the pharmacy to return it . They insisted I get my dollar back.

Anyways today Im at NY Presbyterian for a meeting so if needed I could get medical attention here :D

BTW, even though the X fare is clearly non-refundable in the fare rules, CO seems to be stating that it is refundable in the ticket confirmation process and eTicket receipt. I am intrigued by that, to say the least.
