Would the interactive golf trivia book that I have not once opened, nor even bothered to install the batteries for, qualify as such?

No no no no -- these things should be encouraged there (as well as the UA forum) as it will provide much amusment for others! :D

Double-edged sword. If those forums had not developed a reputation for being difficult to work oneself into it would be worth trying, regardless of if it fails.

My brother once got me a book by Rush Limbaugh. Can't. Stand. The. Man. Though not specifically a 're-gift', I'm pretty sure he picked it so he could read it first.

I have given self-serving gifts before, but that's different. Even self-serving gifts have a shred of motivation toward the recipient...the gift has to stand on its own for the recipient, despite that the giver might want to use it themselves.

Having plain English directions to the target (read: good gifts) provided but attempting to find your own way to said target without benefit of those directions is just foolish and from a certain angle disrespectful.
